Hope Restored

This started a set of chords which the band I was in 11 years ago used to jam with, and would play live under the title of 'Gelatinous Mass and the Monster Show'...

Well, around Christmas I started doing a virtual version of it, and this pretty much the final mix. I'm not sure about the level of the organ solo, or the guitar solo, so if anyone tells me to turn the up, I will [but LISTEN TO IT FIRST - I know what you lot are like!].

NuBi provides the Organ, TubiLeSax does the Sax. sfz fed through classic chorus, mdaCombo and PSPSringverb provides part of the main lead guitar (the rhythm guitar is a similar setup, with less overdrive), with a later lead part provided using GreenMachine. The bass if 4Front GSyn, and the drums are my favourite kit in Loopazoid.

No real instruments were harmed during this production.

Enjoy

I like a bit of funk meself so I picked up on this thread pretty quick
Now I know who Pam Ayres is and this aint it! If there was vibes in in maybe there could be a bit of Roy..
Anyway i love Nubi and I think it sounds fantastic in your track and ...the guitar solo is on fire!
It didnt sound too much like a guitar to me, but it was bloody good.
And the drums too.
And no sign of Pubic anywhere.

I did have a better sound, but the SF I had goes out of tune around Bb6, so had to ditch it. This was the best compromise.

..on a technical note about the guitar solo..
It would need to be played on an axe tuned in 5ths, Fripp style (CGDAEG), since it goes down to the C below bottom E on standard tuning, and goes up that little bit higher too...

Glad you liked it!

btw Pubic has been tucked away out of sight, not too socially acceptable as the other Ayers family members..

I guess I lean more to dry than too 'verbed.. probably since I have to mix on phones, so having too many tails can lead to a bass build up.. I'm always careful with reverb, I find it used often as a cureall..

I'm from the early 70's school of thought with reverb - use as an effect, not a baseline. I recently heard a 'definite master' of Genesis's 'Selling England by the Pound' from 1973.. first thing they'd done was put reverb on the opening lines which used to be almost completely dry: ruined it!

I realise that it's not a popular point of view, but pieces like 'Close to the Edge' and all of the 'Crime of the Century' album work to well, and sound so clean is the care and attention (not to forget immediacy) of not having these 'verb tails chasing..

but, having said all this diatribe... I do understand what you say. I did try it a little wetter, but some of the definition was lost. This was a compromise between modern balance, and being able to pick out stuff!

ta for listening.

your point is well taken ...

i tend to lean in the other direction myself ... all a matter of taste ...
my ears are old and tired ...

some selective channel verb may work , particularly on the leSax , which imo could use a little air ...
i usually turn off the leSax internal FX , and supply my own ...

enjoyed your playing , and programming ...

Nice bit of funk!

Not keen on the sax though, sounds too artificial. Now if it were real it would probably change the whole feel.

after a relisten to some older mixes, I have to agree with you, mr normal...

I had 2 busses, one with 'verb, one with delay. For this mix, I had taken the delay return down. I've taken it back up, with a few other small changes. Sounds a lot better for it. Thanks for making me listen again..
