I did, but the S8 is more expensive than this range. I looked at a lot of reviews from these, most of them from the sound on sound site. They all seem to do the job quite well (for the money). The reason why I also post here is to get as much user opinions as possible from a wide range of users.

I have the Alesis Monitor One's... They were cheap and I feel are pretty good for the money, however I would not buy from alesis again. when I bought them, I noticed intermittent hiss in the right speaker... I thought it was something to do with fluctuating power supply. So eventually (after a few months) I bought a power surge protection, clean power supply, four plug thingy, whatever they're called! But still had the problem with the hiss... So i took them back to the shop (who couldn't give me an immediate refund/ replacement as it had been a couple of months) who sent the speakers back the UK Alesis depot. Alesis then held on to them for a month, to "test and repair" them, and sent the back to the shop without doing anything to them, claiming they were fine all along!. The shop were very good at this point (they too could hear the obvious problem with the right speaker), they tried several times to get a better response from Alesis who refused to help (Even though they were still under warrenty). So the shop gave me a replacement pair of speakers and used my old crap ones as demo speakers.

So the morale of my story is, don't by Alesis, they're a Shit company and I wouldn't buy anything from them again.

Event TR8 XL's. Great low end. Clear mid's and highs. We're only just behind the Mackie's out of the one's I A/Bed. Unfortunately, I need to get some acoustic treatment because the right speaker is against a wall and corner, and they don't have any adjustments.

Event TR8 XL's also:) Amazing clarity, great bass extension, clear and seperated, i love them. Got them from jrrshop, Eric is da man. He rocks ! If you ever need anything get it from him. Never met a nicer guy, always helpful and honest.

I just got my Fostex PM1's yesterday. They got a great review in SOS and can be found for less than £300 if you shop around (I got them from inta-audio.com). I've just set them up so I've not given them a full workout but they literally blew me away when I tried some big bassy synth sounds - I've never had the experience before of speakers producing a solid wave of wind in my face, the bass response was awesome!! And it's nice just to have speakers that don't make horrible buzzy sounds when I turn them up and yet also sound good even at the lowest volume setting. My first proper monitor speakers.

Hi Guys,

I mix in my little box room. Its got wooden wall panels which is great :x ***sigh***

So space being a major factor for me I went with the Fostex PM 0.5

These are the first monitors I ever owned and to my mind I really love 'em - obviously the mixing environment isnt great but the Fostexs do a nice job for me.

Im doing Synth music and at the moment have a couple of acoustic guitar songs in the works.

Im running a pair of Genelec 2029A's........at first sight these little lumps of metal are a bit underwhelming, lovely black sleek slick finish...even so much to catch the light in a lovely way in a dimly lit studio (ok u can probably tell allready im in love with them haha) yes!! there awesome best thing ive ever bought!!!! sound is awesome so clear crisp and flat. i could pick out a pin dropping in the middle of a metalica track!

www.genelec.com definately work a look, the 2029 is no where near the best monitor but in in range and my price range i know i made the right decision......ill be genelec all my career as it stands now.

In the past I've often ended up with quite 'muffled' sounding mixes which was due to my speakers having not enough bass in my view, so I'd like to avoid that. The Tapco's have a low end of around 64 Hz, the others around 50 Hz. Do you guys have experience with these speakers or, more generally, how much bass end you really need in a monitor? (This will be my first set so I've got no real reference).

Again, much thanks for all info - this has turned out to be very interesting if a bit overwhelming for choices.

Maybe I should also add that I'm mixing in a relatively small room close to a wall and a corner.
In a small room you might be better off with less bass!

IMHO it is more important that your system is relatively flat & accurate down to about 70Hz, than it having lots of sub.. unless you mix exclusively for large PA systems!

For the record, I used passive Spirit Absolute 2's for years, & could never get the bass right
I sometimes used to try a mix on my headphones & hardly recognize it!
Now I have a pair of Mackies (HR626), and a naturally good sounding room, and I can mix confidently in the knowledge that when it sounds right it IS right. :D When I put my cans on now I just hear the same sound in my head that was in the room..

I haven't heard any of the models on your shortlist, but I would probably go for the Tapco's, cos Sound on Sound says they're almost as good as my Mackies.

I use the m-audio 8's.
KVR, my adult playground.

I use nht-pro's
doesn't make me one, but
I got a great deal on them a
couple of years ago.

i make DnB which uses the extremes of both ends of the spectrum and i use Behringer truths but every one else uses the Hr 824s however the specs on the adams look very nice. :)

Thanks, that's the kind of info I was after... well, my mind boggled for choice the last post I did and now it's positively screaming to take up a different hobby, like writing. Although I'm afraid then I'd get confused as to what pen to use...

Seriously: I appreciate all your opinions and reviews, been reading on a bit and also checking out how much actual place I can free on my desk and on account of all the positive reviews I am currently leaning towards the Truths, albeit the smaller 2030A version. Is anybody using those, or has anyone of you heard them in action?

Funny, it's gonna be a similar post... kinda :)

I use HR824, which i love. There is a pair of Behringer Truth at the office, which i don't like very much. The the extrem ends of the spectrum sound strange to me.

And... a friend of mine bought a pair of Adam S3A (sorry, Marc JX8P, that's probably out of budget!) I must say i never heard better monitors, a pure delight. I could see the guy pushing the faders while listening! really increadible.
It has the punch and precision of NS10, but with basses, something i never experienced on Mackies or Genelecs.

For mixing, you might try giving these a go...

http://www.yorkville.com/products.asp?t ... =20&id=118

Powered 6.5 inch driver and silk dome tweeter in a nice spacious box, switchable filtering, defeatable limiter.

Solid firm lows, smooth crisp highs and a nice detailed middle. The perfect NS10 substitute for those, like me, who have blown their last remaining pair up. The best part...the beautiful translation to other systems your mixes have.

And where oh where would I be without the Tannoy 6.5 MKII. If the vocal sounds wrong on these humble boxes, it is wrong. Used to mix on these alot when I could not stand the screeching NS10 tweeter any longer.

I also use HHB Circle 5s (Harbeth design). Very musical, superb midrange detail, great soundstage presentation and imaging. Nice amps. Low end that actually sounds correct and not over emphasized. If some mix elements are too wet these will not hide that fact. Low level details are very obvious. Makes a fine sounding, though expensive, 5.1 setup if your room is largeish and propery designed and treated.

Lastly, I have some big soffit mounted custom one off boxes that are great for parting the clients hair and such but way too good sounding to ever mix on. One engineer says they make the films look better. Perhaps.

Others I have used in the past...

Auratones...supposedly the ultimate lo-fi/am radio check...whatever, they sure looked cute on the meter bridge

Genelec...glad lots of folks like them...I never could. What ever is up with all the lows and highs??

Dynaudio...their lack of distortion is a dream, a lovely one that is

Yamaha NS10m...ouch, and more ouch...good grief I can not for the life of me understand how we ever mixed on these, let alone got it sounding right.

KRK...erm, what ever model they were. Shrill and bright. I didn't think there was another tweeter in existance that would make my ears as fatigued as the NS10 tweeter, but sure enough. Maybe they have fixed that in the newer models. The wee 4 inch KRKs sound pretty good, plus they are as cute as buttons.

Mackie HR824...I run into these things all the time in studios big and small and I have really tried to like them, but alas, I suppose it is not to be. Just too much low end for me and it never seems to sound quite right down there. Loose, slow?? Peers I really respect use them and like them so maybe I'm being an uppity wanker

Event 20/20bas...loose, odd sounding lows, where's the mids, and boy oh boy do those amps get hot!

Lots and lots of JBLs...I swear we switched to NS10s the second they became available primarily because we were so *totally* sick of that JBL sound that even listening to a tweeter as harsh as the NS10m was a blessed gift from heaven. Now how sad is that?
