Hello All -
I know it's a noob question and I promise you I keep reading up on the topic but am just lost :(

I have this soundcard:
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/Delta1010LT.html
http://www.m-audio.com/images/global/ma ... Manual.pdf

and also one of these:
http://www.behringer.com/EN/Products/Q502USB.aspx
http://www.behringer.com/assets/Q502USB ... QSG_WW.pdf

and also a fender guitar amp with a "line out" as well as "preamp out"

What is the ideal method for me to record mic or guitar? do i still need another piece of equipment like a "DI Box" or "USB Interface"??

I'm using Sonar 8.5 that includes Guitar Rig 3 (if that helps my cause idk)

Thanks for reading this post i truly appreciate it :)

The mixer should be fine for guitar and mic. If the mixer has an instrument (hi-impedence) input or switch, then you should be good with the guitar, and all mixers usually have a low impedence inputs for mics. If you find you have problems with the guitar signal then you might need a DI box.

and so how would i then connect the mixer to the soundcard/PC?
via 1/4" or RCA or USB?

let me try again because that first link got split:
http://www.behringer.com/assets/Q502USB ... QSG_WW.pdf

the pictures show a guitar going directly into this thing so I would assume that much is ok

all said though i'm trying to look at the big picture (and understand it).
I'm sure there are a number of ways i can accomplish this goal....i'm just looking for the ideal, least problematic approach

thanks again for the reply.....i can't wait to explore everything this site has to offer - wow!

Just connect the mixer to the PC with USB and then route the USB from the mixer to the channel you are using in your DAW.

so the RCA/1.4"/XLR inputs on my soundcard are a bit useless?

ok i plugged this mixer in via USB last week and the youtube video i was playing at the time had it's audio magically transferred to the mixer and away from my PC speakers when i did that.
so i need to figure out to make it so that the mixer is the one GIVING information and not the other way around

please anyone feel free to expand - i need all of the explaining i can get on this one unfortunately!

thanks again robojam

You need to have your speakers connected to the mixer. If you're playing a YouTube video, you would need to change your default playback device (in Control Panel) to the driver for the mixer.

You could also use your other soundcard for all this if you want, I just find a mixer easier for guitar or vocals.
