What about Korg M1?
Korg M1 is GREAT, covers a lot of sonic territory and is only $50.

Hey, if its good enough for Vangelis, Rick Wakeman, Mike Oldfield, Jean-Michel Jarre,
I think it can get the job done. :)

Why don't you think of a hardware workstation? something like Yamaha MOX6? It has good quality sounds (I would buy one if I have the money!). You won't be worried about the future compatibility except the editor maybe.

For me now, Korg M1/Wavestation + some effects = not so outdated great sounds :-D
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

The main reason why I didn't sell my Yamaha XG hardware synth (MU50) was due to the bread and butter sound it offers. You've got a Roland JV-1080 - I'd incorporate it as much as possible to get back "down to earth" from overproduced sounds.

That... and I recently fell in love with the CWItech sampler to play back SF2s again. Can't get any more oldschool than that. Especially for someone that grew up with SF2s.

Halion Sonic 2. Its like an uber-JV1080. I had Roland Jv-880 and XP-50 in the past. I had the same problems with the Kontakt Lib , not what i like.

Hypersonic 2. I don't know how it compares to Halion Sonic 2 though, does anybody know of a comparison review?

Post

Sounds nothing alike. Hypersonic is a lot better.

Heh, I was never good at being sarcastic. Notice the bloated adjectives used in my description. I was making a point that there is a lot to Kontakt but one has to "dig in" to get it. A mere run through the presets is uninspiring.

But that is why I also mentioned other options. 8)

another mention for proteus vx.. "free" doesn't get too much better.

I once sampled some actual natural bread... Now, butter sounds like a challenge.

 that sounds really good.

Personally I don't think anybody has made a VSTi plugin that rivals a Roland JV series synth. The sounds of the roland are simply superior to anything out there.. but in my case the taste is completely subjective. I've always liked that particular sound, especially their brass and violins. They are just so "Rolandish" like nothing else.. very compressed, controlled and a bit cheesy which makes them awesome.

I even thought about multisampling my XP-50 at some point but it's such a chore.

Cheers!

Dimension Pro
That is an absolute bargain. Incredible amount of instruments and a free top notch sampler.

No one mentioned the Roland TTS-1?

The Roland TTS-1 is basically the JV's GM bank, only a lot better. :nutter:

Get Music Creator 6 Touch for 50 bucks. The TTS-1 comes with it.

I mean, it's literally the same sounds that are in the JVs.

Other options include the DSF libraries. I use SFZ+ with their Emu libraries, but I still mostly prefer the TTS-1.

Edit: Oh yeah. The only problem is that it's a DXi, but that's never been a problem for me.

TTS-1 and Edirol Orchestral replaced my XP-30 years ago. The latter's been discontinued, but it's still solid if you can find a copy. The presets are generally more usable than what I've found in Miroslav.
