I found an old song of mine on a cassette yesterday - a song I recorded years ago and almost forgotten about - so I decided to post it on my Soundcloud account.

Weird thing is when I looked at my stats today, the song has received 1 like, but ZERO PLAYS..!

Strange, I thought. How can a song be "liked" if nobody's heard it?

The liker also re-posted it.

So I went to the "likers' page and there are a shit-load of tracks there - all very different and from different artists.

There's also a link to a site which offers 3,000 plays of your songs for $5.

And the 3,000 plays for 5 dollars service is...

Smells fishy to me.

I don't know. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I'd rather get plays and likes because people genuinely like my music. I can't stand hype.

Same sort of thing here. Within hours there are several likes but sometime only 1 or even zero listens. I'm not sure what S'cloud is supposed to do but for me it's nothing more than a way to show a song to someone I know (e.g. how's this mix?).

Yeah, I had actually posted a topic about this several months back.
Typically if you read the account description they'll have something saying, "buy soundcloud followers! Real followers for your account and blahblahbalh stupid scam"
The reason they share and/or favorite is to do just want it did with you: Get your attention to look at their profile in hopes you'll click the link and "buy followers".

Trust me, I uploaded a joke track the other day where all I said was "phat" in a funny voice that I pitched down and it got shared 3 times and favorited 4 times - Zero plays.
I am pretty certain these Soundcloud users simply go through the most recent uploads and just favorite and share everything to garner attention.
