Well, I've been here for a year and a half now, so it's about time I posted some music.

I basically had a complete creative block about 3 years ago, so I've spent that time messing around with noises/discovering synthesis etc. Time went by, my funny noises became nicer, and I only really figured out the other day that I was still making music (kinda silly when process music is all I really listen to), just not the traditional sequencer sort. So I left my disk recording while improvising as usual and came up with this.

Drone Excerpt (2.5MB ogg)

Apologies for the low bitrate non-standard format, but I have very little webspace. Despite the low bitrate, there's nothing in the higher frequency registers, so the sound quality is surprisingly high (I had some trouble discerning the ogg from the wav). Fans of Ekkehard Ehlers/Fennesz et al may enjoy. Cheers folks.

It's good.

I have found myself more fascinated lately by particular sounds than by "songs." I'm surprised with all of the tools pretty much at everyone's disposal that we're not hearing more experimental notions of what music is and how it must be structured. When you put together bass, drums, guitar, and voice, I don't suppose the combination is going to inspire anything like what you've done here. But with tools like Absynth, Crystal, Tassman, Reaktor, z3ta+, and so forth, the sounds themselves can be so different that they seem to invite us to let them be the stars and not to box them in by the pop song formula.

Very nicely done drone Cron. Fortunate for me I have Winamp install. Love the slow build-up and the sound quality is pretty good from my end. Hope to hear more from you in the future.

Beautifully said. I think find myself more emotionally moved by few notes with variations in texture and harmonics rather than melodic figures played with a single sound. I really love it when the sheer physicality of a sound is enough in itself to move you. Thanks for listening

i've noticed that there's a high noise level
due to the compression? or something else?

what synths did you use? that sounds great.

organ - ic sounds - very charming fields.

Thanks for listening Wopelka. The noise you hear is probably the noise of the (old) source material. No synths were used. The sounds are piano chords from an old recording snipped out, timestretched to ridiculous levels and pitchshifted/reordered into a new piece of music with a channel of pseudo random sinewaves tweaked around to make additional resonances. This all gets compressed to buggery (which won't help the noise issue). That's then fed into an FFT processor (Spectral Monkeyage) to meld the whole thing together into a "chunk" of sound.

excellent stuff, the sound really vibrates under my skin, gives me that rushy coming up kinda feeling I love from this kinda music. I'd be very interested to hear more of your stuff. Thats great to know this was once piano sounds, sounds beautiful.

Also, your living in Leeds, same as me. Quite Random, do I know you, do you hang out at Termite/Vector shows or anything like that?

Great stuff, cron. Like the sense of movement in this one and really like the way some of the lower tones chug in. Keep it up. I'd love to hear more of this.

I've been both listening to and making a lot of stuff in a similar vein, lately. Just picked up the new albums by Fennesz and Daniel Menche, and listening to Tired Sounds of Stars of the Lid a lot.
