well, that kinda says most about a particular sector sample-pack and soundware business, really. you can pretty much chart the emergence of new genres by the rush of the same set of familiar loop vendors rushing to tweak their snare/kick sound fractionally and issue a new set of loops 3bpm faster than those for their last goldrush fad. closely followed by the preset pack for Sylenth or Massive.

<dons illuminati-repelling tinfoil> i wouldnt be surprised if some of these genres dont actually exist in real life, they're just the creation of a secret conspiratorial cabal of sample and preset developers who are basically just taking the piss. What was that last one, moomintrollism or summat? Nuff said.

I'm not impressed by trap. Better than West Coast hip-hop but that's not saying a lot. Aside from a few outliers, I'm generally not into hip-hop anyway.

While on the subject of genres: what is the deal with so-called glitch-hop that has zero influence from glitch? Was there just a glitch in naming the genre?

Or "dark swing" that does not swing, and is basically just lo-fi house?

I'm disappointed not to find any sample sets out there for Witch House or Seapunk.

Thanks for posting that trap remix yeahdubs vid, hadn't seen that one yet! I must admit the first one was better tho :)

I like some trap, but the sound has such a massive bandwagonism that it's really hard to find good tunes. Same problem with moombahton IME.. The yeahdubz videos showcase the fatiguing aspects of this quite nicely!

Like most "modern" clubmusic genres, you need a good selector with impeccable record selection chops to enjoy trap IMVHO. A pity that so many experienced DJs and record junkies (ie. ppl my age lol) never give these new genres a chance.. Theyd rather just ignore it and keep yelling "get off my lawn" while spinning rehashes of 90s techno/house/trance smh I mean they wouldn't compare a Robert Hood track to a Swedish House Mafia tune, so why oh why they do that with "EDM"?

Maybe I'm a little out of touch, but by the contents of the YouTube videos in this thread, what was trap a few years ago has been pretty much brostepped beyond recognition, except with the addition of more bubblegum than even brostep managed to smear over oldskool dubstep.

For extra credit, some – well, er most - of the rhythm programming in those samples is utterly atrocious. There's a reason early hiphop used breakbeats...

both those songs:
the first one says it all "dumb dumb dumb"

the second, clearly the artists realized how extremely canned and similar it is to everyone else's rubbish that they had to remind you who you are listening at the beginning.
The second ...
This means nothing, there are good tracks when the artist reminds you who you are listening,
for example this is a NETSKY track, listen at 1:10

Or this is a GOLDIE track, right at the beginning:

Of course you can say these are shit tracks - everyone has his own favorite.
I just want to say, when they "remind" you , that doesn't make it a bad song.

Are we calling those trap? They sound like DnB to me. I could mix that first one into some 20 year old records. I never liked dancing to jungle/dnb, I always thought of it as house music for the head.

At any rate, as long as I've got your attention, let me pop on a few records to get my morning in the right mood. Some chill DnB, and well, just some chill downtempo stuff, not really DnB. All from back in the day, play in order to take your morning down to about two.

When I read words where people are describing music, it almost always sounds fascinating to me. Then I listen to what they were talking about and wonder if we're hearing the same thing.

For something a bit more contemporary, you might want to check out some MachineDrum. That kind of soft, vaguely jazzy Omni Trio-like DnB has had a bit of a resurgence lately.

The only thing I really like about trap is how they slice their hihats, and play around with the pitch of the snares, and have that multi-levelled double/halftime feel. But you know what? Jungle was doing that in the early 90's and doing it way funkier if you ask me.

I've heard a few trap influenced tracks I liked, but the clue's in the word "influenced". Most music that aspires to be one genre just ends up not interesting me.

Nice, thanks. I hear that sort of thing pretty regularly on Groove Salad, but never when I'm out. Where is it begin played?

From what I understand is that it did come from actual glitchy elements in the song with a slower tempo and a "hop" style rhythm.
I believe Pretty Lights is considered glitch hop.

His newer stuff I'm not a fan off, but a lot of the songs from "Taking Up Your Precious Time" were pretty good, with some subtle glitch, but mostly record scratches and reversals - oh and LOTs of sampling and mangling of samples from other songs, which I guess is where the "glitch" comes in.

Well now. I'm familiar with Pretty Lights (and like some of their stuff) and never heard it called glitch hop before. Maybe whatever internet radio station I was listening to that claimed to be glitch-hop really wasn't.

It seems today people are claiming to be part of one genre just to make themselves sound cool...or whatever these darn kids are into dothing these days.
But seriously, my brother showed me a band that claimed they were drum n bass even though all their music were 4-on-the-floor 130BPM house stuff.

Some of the examples just in this thread show that to be true too. I think that's the new trend in the industry, claim to be part of a genre you aren't actually in.

amazing and predictable to see the "kvr industry pros" discussing a statement of existential industrial horror as if it were a pass/fail deal.

look at it like PETA, it's not about whether they can talk, it's about whether they can suffer.
you come and go, you come and go. amitabha neither a follower nor a leader be tagore "where roads are made i lose my way" where there is certainty, consideration is absent.
