What baffles me are the number of accounts on KVR that do NOTHING but post links to their "beats" and talk about themselves. And these accounts always get replies and advice. Yet when someone who contributes a lot posts something and everyone ignores it, they get the advice "maybe you should try contributing more"?!

I don't understand it either. I've hopped up on a soap box before about how I think the cafe should be reformed, but I guess I forgot my megaphone or something because typically it doesn't even garner a response like "That's dumb, you're dumb."

Sadly I don't think reforming it or any new rules or moderation would really help. KVR's already run by volunteer mods with enough on their plate. As much as I'd like to see a more productive and/or fair system I'm not even sure how that would be possible, since turning the balance of listening/advising to being listened and critiqued into a "one hand washes the other" type of transaction will simply force a lot of false exchanges to gain kudos in the system.

At least with this system you know, if only one person comments on your track, they probably actually mean what they say about it.

Well some ideas I had would still do the "I scratch yours, you scratch mine" thing, but kind of take it a step further with "honesty points"

Basically a user based voting system on responders to their tracks, essentially each post in the Cafe is moderated by you - in a sense. Where you can first off: Set what level of "honesty points" is required to be able to respond (people can still listen, but just can't leave feedback)
Any user who posts in that thread can also thumb up or down your critique on the track, obviously a thumb up means a positive point and a thumb down is a negative. Essentially saying: Hey, you can't just post BS to get the "I scratch you back" thing. You actually have to try.

I mean, that's the concept, not very fleshed out because...well I didn't want to put a lot of thought into a system that won't be implemented, but that's the general idea. Up voting and down voting users who post on your music with a publicly displayed number so others know how helpful that user is. This number would strictly be in the Cafe only, as it shouldn't affect use of the forums anywhere else.

The idea was the the poster can set the required number of honesty points. ergo; if you accept all comments, useless or not, you could ultimately just turn them off.

Buuuuuut, once again, it was a brief idea I had that I know won't be implemented on KVR, ever, so, it definitely has it's flaws.
i.e. being new to the forums if you can't post because everyone keeps setting the honesty points too high then how can you get points yourself? I figured maybe starting people out at a certain postive number would sort of help counteract that, but even that has problems.
Secondly, with honesty being such a key point, a lot of this idea comes based on honesty, but what would stop people from abusing the system?

Like I said, it's an incomplete idea.

when will people learn that great music is a drop in a bucket, and average music is a bucket in an ocean. this is just the way it is. if your average, and you think your great, the world will very quickly tell you how average you are. we have all been there, we all want to be famous and most of us never will. your need for success/recognition is no more desired then anybody else. so write music, enjoy doing it, or do something else.

Because statistically it's a non starter, and as soon as you want to make a living out of it, you start sucking dick and the music turns crap. Usually - but not necessarily.

Most people who do make a living out of music often labour under the misapprehension that their success is due to their own talent, insight, intelligence and good looks. Whereas they usually just happened to coincide with a dip in the social fashion continuum and got thrown off on one. There is success among the genuinely talented and emotionally powerful, but it is all subject to the unpredictabilities of chance, market positioning and industry bribery. There is no formula or helpful foresight, other than knowing that if you don't get off your butt, you ain't gonna get that gold disc. It also helps to be good looking, have an attitude, a great voice, corking songs with a good hook, a rich well-connected manager, a good PR company etc etc. But these are neither necessary nor sufficient conditions for achieving anything.

If it's millions you're after, the statistics get even worse. Wait until Elton, Michael, and Billy retire or die.

Okay, so I listened to "I'm so chic" and while it's not bad at all, the problem seems to be that all (layered) elements follow the same chord progression (with a slight variance sometimes in the bass line). Sounds like simple octave doubling which is pretty boring. I recommend to introduce some different melodies to make the song more interesting. Or some extraordinary vocals, or some percussion elements...
