Inspired by the classic Prime Time* from 1978, Little PrimalTap captures the highly distinctive sonic imprint of this quirky, and well-loved (by those in the know) vintage digital delay. Don't be fooled by it's simple interface, Little PrimalTap lets you unleash your creative urges to echo, loop, warp, distort, mangle, or create cacophonous cascades of otherworldly sounds.
THE PRIMAL SOUND

The Prime Time was used by a wide variety of artists back in the 80's (that was it's prime, heh) for rich guitar delay, chorus, flange and such, and it did a great job with those things but the really unique character of it's sound came from one of it's limitations. In an attempt to get more out of the technology (and probably stay under budget) it had a feature called Multiply that halved the sample rate each time the delay was doubled. Sound weird? It does indeed. And it's just the kind of weird that we love.

TWIST AND SHOUT

On this little beast, turning knobs is where it's at and that's how you get to hear all the oddities it can create. The Multiply knob supplies extra delay time that has drastic tonal changes with each increase. The Adjust knob creates pitch shifts, chorus, or flange when moved. The Feedback and Input drive tie it all together to allow for sounds just not found on any of the "normal" delay plug-ins. Abnormal is the new black.

FEEDBACK LOOP

Yes, the Feedback can go infinite, and do everything from classic delay style looping to old school sci-fi space noise. Oh, and we doubled the massive 256ms of delay time from the original (128ms if you had the non-expanded one) to 512ms so you've got some serious looping power if you need it. It's ok to let it get out of control, unlike the old days where you could blow your speakers (or your ears) if you didn't stay on top of the feedback. Little PrimalTap lets you use it as another layer of sonic color, and even opens the door for synthesizer type sounds.

Wow, even comes with it's own FaceBook slider :o

To share those delays all over the world I guess :clown:

 Too late, too late, I'm afraid I have already gotten hold of one...

This plugin is awesome! It has A LOT of character.

It's going to be one of my favourite plugins, I'm really looking forward for the full version.
Make a simple four on the floor pattern, add PrimalTap, sync it by ear, set multply to a lo-fi setting like 4x, crank the input and keep the mix low... I bet you don't need much more!

First half dry, then with Primal Tap enabled:

I really like this so far as I have nothing else that sounds similar. Not exactly a bread & butter effect but when used sparingly can be quite effective.

Definitely needs to be automated from dry to wet during the track - doesn't really sit so well if just left "on". Others may have a different view however.

I'm also looking forward to the full version when it comes out down the line. I have a couple old digital delays from roughly around that same time (an old Deltalab for one) and I still use it whenever I'm running my hardware synths. This Prime Time inspired plugin is unique though and sounds great!
Available on iTunes, Amazon, etc.

While I tend to agree with Simon's comment (in that other thread) that this plugin is not doing anything particularly new it does have a certain character (which is very nice), and in typical Soundtoys fashion the GUI is fine tuned for doing a specific thing quickly, easily and with great results.

So I think that's a win. Definitely looking forward to the full version.

Peace,
Andy.

I had guessed that they were going to release something along these lines when I saw their announcement for the SXSW party:

The Delay Multiply X10 is suggestive of an older digital delay, and the "Over-Emphasis Filter" is similar to the pre/de-emphasis filters used in digital delays with lower bit resolutions. The "ATTITUDE CORRECTION" made me think Lexicon, as several of the older Lexicon schematics have an "aperture correction" filter. I only recently figured out what that is, after reading a 1971 AES paper about the first Lexicon digital delay (created by Francis Lee and Barry Blesser).

I haven't listened to this yet. I'm sure it will be cool. It will be interesting to hear the full-fledged Prime Time model when it is released. There are some WEIRD things going on in the convertors of that box. "Floating point conversion" is used, but with 10 dB gain steps, which will result in...something...versus a standard convertor.

How does this plug compare to other delay plugs, like Supertap by Waves?: http://www.waves.com/plugins/supertap?g ... cgodAjMAYA

Delay plug market is kinda crowded, is there need for more when there is also so much freeware already available like from TAL?: http://bedroomproducersblog.com/2011/02 ... t-plugins/

There is always room for another delay, especially on that is 64-bit for all hosts. Many of the freeware delays are 32-bit or specific to an OS.

Are there any cons about having to get an account and install software Ilok? I've heard bad things about the extra process involved in ilok. Anything for me to be afraid of (slowing down computer or anything negative)?

Thanks!
