musicdevelopments wrote:Yes, I was thinking about the same. The phrases are saved in the Custom Phrases directory, but there cannot be two phrases with the same name (which means the filename will also be the same) even if the group is different. Subdirectories will be implemented though. I do not know yet how to solve this without making the whole thing overly complicated for the user. Maybe the 'group' could be the subdirectory itself, and when you save a phrase to a 'group', a directory will be created for that group. This sounds good, doesn't it?

Thanks!
Attila
Ah. Now I completely understand the issue -- the name of the phrase is tied to the name of the file on the file system. I agree that support for subdirectories is imperative to solving this problem and making the Phrase Browser more intuitive to most users. So essentially you would have the file system being the database for the phrases. For the user interface, I think it would be best to follow the file manager style for grouping:

I think the simplest approach might be for a one-to-one representation between files on the file system and phrases in the RC Phrase Browser. Users would have to accept the fact that deleting a folder or phrase in the Browser would mean to actually delete the files and folders on the file system. Deletes performed by RC need not be destructive, though; "deleting" the files to the recycle-bin/trash-can would probably be best (this would allow a user to recover a file). Also RC would need to continuously monitor the complete folder tree of the phrases folder to keep the Phrase Browser and file system in sync (hopefully such constant monitoring of the file system will not impact responsiveness or lead to a lot of bugs). Modifying and deleting files on the file system would result in the same changes being made to RC's Phrase Browser. The file system is the database.

For the management of deletion there is another solution, absolutely non destructive. It is already used on many systems: put a point in first character of the filename. Like this none file is destroyed, simply when a filename begins by a point it is considered as deleted from the point of view of RapidComposer.

And the user is more confident to use such a system. The user wants an invisible (considered as deleted for RapidComposer) file getting back to visible in RapidComposer? He just remove the point, and at the next launch of RapidComposer the file is back at its place in the collection.

Don't you think so?

I think that would be quite a handy feature and a time saver. I have a bunch of arpeggios and drum beat MIDIs that I would like to batch-import into the RC Phrase Database.

 One way to invoke the feature could be to copy the midi files to the phrases folder. If RC can monitor the contents of the phrase folder, it could instantly convert them to similarly-named phrase files and imports them into the Phrase Browser; otherwise it could read them from the phrases folder on the next start up. File/folder name collisions could be handled in a prescriptive manner (e.g. append a number to the end of the new file or folder name).

Yes, that should work just fine. RC could simply ignore files that begin with the special character (i.e. the full-stop).

If RC can monitor the contents of the phrase folder, you would not need to wait until the next launch of RC; instead RC could react immediately to the renamed phrase file and put it back in the Phrase Browser's UI.

So many great ideas, thanks tonedef and BlackWinny for the brainstorming! :wheee:

This sounds really simple and useful. I already started to work on a more complex solution, but this is much better and simpler.

Thanks!!!

Hello Attila and all

I've just found something curious in a phrase having join notes. Look here at the chord G:

I have shown all the parameters if you want to try to reproduce it.

Courage!

I don't know why but I can't add anymore a new line with the Structure Inspector. The two green symbols '+' don't appear anymore when I click a line.

I've tried as VST first, but also in Standalone (with a brand new composition to test), and it's the same behavior.

I can't find what could prevent it...

Any suggestions...?

Hello BlackWinny,

yes, in the last update the small add/remove icons disappeared from the structure inspector. This is fixed in the latest beta which I uploaded a minute ago. It also contains batch conversion of MIDI files to phrases! It is quite simple, but works well. You will find it under Settings / Directories.

Really? Which windows version are you using? This should not happen!

Thanks,
Attila
