Browser Question

Scrolling up / down through the sample browser using the scroll buttons will playback samples in most DAW's.

But it seems that not all developers have thought about adding the ability to re-audition the selected sample by pressing the "right" cursor on the qwerty keyboard.

By adding this option we can tap the "right" cursor to the beat in order to repeat the currently selected sample (from the browser) when finding that perfect sample building drum loops.

As far as I know only FL Studio has this implemented in its browser which totally rocks.

I'm pretty sure Bitwig's browser can do so as well right?

^ This and hot swapping are two things which would be great. Live has hot swapping for plugins which is incredibly useful, but it would be amazing if you could hot swap and audition audio files that are already in the arrangement the same way.

People load audio files into Ableton's simpler for this specific purpose as it lets you quickly hot swap samples....it would be huge if you could somehow do this with audio files in the arrangement and have it, say, auto trim the audio file to a pre-determined length or to the length of the audio file which preceded it.

That's one thing I DON'T like about live. I'd much rather have a thing where you can just cycle through.

That's possible now, although maybe not exactly as you described it. As far as I can tell, a sample must finish playing through before the right-arrow trigger works again.

So the 2 pane browser works like this (folders top, files below):

From the file list pressing left a couple of time will return to the folder browser.

Pressing right will enter the file list below the folder list.

At this point up / down selects files, pressing right auditions a file.

Peace,
Andy.

It's possible to preview MIDI, and the project tempo will be used but AFAICT it's not possible for the MIDI to trigger sounds via the current track - it uses a default saw wave synth instead.

Probably not difficult to implement though, perhaps this will be improved in a future update. It's good enough for v1.0 at the moment.

Peace,
Andy.

Yeah, no doubt they're gonna be huge. It's a good thing!

As Andy already said, that is mostly possible.
You have additional buttons for automatic playback of loops/samples when selected and whether or not to play them in song tempo.
And I just tried: if the sample/loop is playing, hitting right arrow stops, hitting it again (re-)starts from the beginning, so if you hit it very fast twice, you get the asked for behaviour.
You would need to try out if that fits the bill ;-)

I personally like the navigation a lot. It's interesting how pressing the left button goes to the upper browser window where you select folders and the right button goes into the folder content list in the lower pane. Other browsers often require one to switch between two such windows with a separate shortcut...

Cheers,

Tom

No fades. ATM it's hard cuts only, the In and Out Fade-Buttons in the Inspector are only very short ones to prevent clicks. No overlapping audio and no fades.
I know it hurts. ;-)

Only hard cuts would be boring! What's wrong with the gain expression lane? Fading individual snippets with direct feedback of the audio level in the waveform representation? I love it!

Ok, getting this straight for the list:

32 bit Live only supports 32 bit plugs
64 bit Live only supports 64 bit plugs
64 bit Bitwig supports 32 and 64 bit plugs

So 32 Bitwig only supports 32 bit plugs, right? I'm assuming it's not possible for a 32 bit daw to support 64 bit plugs?

There is only 1 version of Bitwig, but it supports both 32-bit and 64-bit plugins on Mac/Windows.

Well, Computer Music Magazine have done their review and the score is in....but I wouldn't want to spoil anyone's excitement by revealing it. I'll just say that if you know how most DAWs score in CMM then Bitwig Studio is no different.

Grum.
