I always thought the term "Krautrock" was simply a term for rock from germany, preferrably with german lyrics. And the german wikipedia article confirms that: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krautrock Has nothing to do with psychedelic rock, or even electronica. Berlin School seems way more feasible for this type of thing.

Actually, i'm surprised that the term "Krautrock" is even known outside of germany. :D

(it was me!)

@ chk071
The term "krautrock" was coined by english journalist(s). It wasn't really known about in Germany outside a small scene around a particular club in Berlin (Zodiak Free Arts Lab), started by Conrad Schnitlzer, Han Joachim Roedelius and some other chap (forget the name). Not for some time, anyway. Maybe the term has been appropriated to encapsulate other general german sang stuff in Germany since then, I don't know. Unfortunately I don't speak German so can't read that article without translation.

But its a term coined by British journalists, in the British music press.
An idiot on Set Theory:
"In some cases there is an object called red that contains everything that is red. In much the same way a pot is a plate."

Ooh... so in fact i have to be surprised that it's known inside of germany? That's a crazy turnaround. But makes sense of course, a german would probably not refer to himself as a "Kraut". :D

i'm mad at the nazis for taking that symbol.

it's so pretty when you look at it with untainted eyes.

a word like "krautrock" has a much lower half-life of being offensive before it can be transformed. swastika is gonna take centuries....

Adding close to nothing to this thread I just want to say I'm going to a gig with Tangerine Dream performing the soundtrack of the movie "Sorcerer" from 1977, Michael Rother featuring Hans Lampe playing music from both Neu! and Harmonia, and Dieter Moebius playing some songs from his band Cluster. Krautrocksynth deluxe! This in about 11 days. Yay!

maybe, but i actually prefer diminishing over grandiose as far as genre descriptors go.
better to be positively surprised by something pejoratively named than the other way round.

seriously, one of the better things about being a Kraut is that having to deal with the darker part of our history can result in a more profound understanding of the illusory nature of borders, nationality, ethnicity, and the false pride attached to all of that. it makes self-deprecation a little easier. ze funny germans, essen mein scheiße.

funny: the most pride charged nationalist thing i can say about my country is that on average, we're miles ahead of some of the incredibly naive nationalist tendencies you can find elsewhere, like the US.
It's diminishing because instrumental electronic rock was a worldwide phenomenon; artists using similar equipment creating a whole new genre out of their explorations. It wasn't just Germans.

And it wasn't just synthesizers - rock artists were using IRCAM-type tape manipulations, very avant-garde stuff, in mass-market recordings very early on.

The whole artistic movement that was - IS - electronic instrumental rock needs a history that looks at it as an artistic movement, not as slots in the record bins.

"Krautrock" is a marketing term and I guess acceptable for those purposes. Hell, I'm an American of German descent, the largest non-ethnic minority in the U.S.

All true, but too late. Good luck persuading the record shops, music consumers at large and journalists to abandon it now!

So then it all make sense :D

Yeah hehe

Well whatever it's called, I love a lot of that music from that time and it's modern derivatives and pastiches.

If I could play guitar, it's what I'd be doing with it for sure.

Funny i never made that connection.

As illegitimate the initial coining of the word might've been, if the journalist dude actually thought of that double meaning he gets a cookie for being clever.

Doesn't make much sense, neither in German language nor in Bavarian dialect. "Kraut" is usually associated with products made of cabbage, "Blaukraut", "Weißkraut", "Sauerkraut" etc.

Weed is called "Gras" (grass) but not "Kraut", and herb cigs are called "Kräuter-Zigaretten"...
