Plug a Wah wah pedal into software synths

I need help because I couldn't solve my problem...

Basically, I would like to plug a hardware Wah Wah Pedal into my software synths like clavinet or etc.. and then record it into my DAW while I am playing the synth via using my Wah Wah...

How can I achieve that?

Software synth -> soundcard Line OUT -> WahWah pedal -> soundcard Line IN -> DAW track Record.

you'll ideally need 3 or more outputs on your soundcard; two for regular monitoring, then one more for the output from the synth.

depending your DAW, it may already include a means of doing loops through outboard effects; if not, you may have to do the following... insert your synth on a track and route the track to your 3rd hardware output. Connect the 3rd hardware output to the input of your pedal. Connect the output of your pedal to one of the inputs on your soundcard. Set up another track to record that input.

MOTU have a good reputation, but do you definitely need 8 ins and outs? A 2in/4out soundcard would be sufficient for what you initially described, and almost certainly cheaper.

It would be better to have a quality Wah Pedal VST so you wouldn't have to leave the digital domain. Going out of the Digital to Analog and Back is going to add roundtrip system latency and I'm assuming you want to sweep your instruments with the Wah filter as close to real time as possible.

Yes, you can just run the output of your vst through, for example, Native Instruments Guitar Rig (or any filter effect, really). Attach a modulation pedal to your midi controller keyboard and map it to control filter cutoff. That way you never have to leave the digital domain, and you'll also have a lot more options in terms of filter sound.

There is a Guitar Rig Pedal hardware... but people normally use it with the software guitar rig. My question is that, can I use the pedal of the guitar rig hardware with any other vsts like a Wah Wah VST etc..?

Depends which Rig Kontrol you're talking about. If you're using the original RK (which is basically a DI box with four switches and a pedal), no. If you're using RK2 or 3 (more switches and a USB connection), yes.

Also you need to bare in mind that most guitar pedals are designed to accept an instrument level signal which is not as 'hot' as the line out from your DAW. This means that even at very low gain, the signal from your computer might cause the guitar pedal to distort and create unexpected results because the level is too high.

As an example, I ran a line level effects loop connected to a few BOSS pedals, and if I turned the volume up slightly I'd get nasty screeching which was not pleasant!

The solution would be to look at some kind of 'reamp' box which will bring a line signal down to instrument level, which you can then plug back into a preamp on your soundcard (note that plugging directly into a line input might be quiet, meaning you might introduce noise to the signal when boosting to a suitable level).

So yea to run a mono hardware effects send you'd need at least 3 outputs (2 for monitors, 1 for 'effects send') and at least 1 input with a preamp (for 'effects return'). The Focusrite 2i4 fits the bill at a reaonsable price, and you have a spare input for a microphone or something!
