I think it would be great if responses to this thread would give ANYTHING that the responder thinks would improve peoples use of ableton live. Tricks you may have discovered that you now cant live/LIVE without.
I personally am interested in PERFORMANCE tricks over using it for production but hey this is a forum anything else goes, right?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE use one of the other forums to bad mouth the application.

I would just like to plug Dave Hill Jr.'s book Ableton Live 2 Power!. This is based upon the earlier version of Live, but it did help explain the fundamentals of the workflow, and gives good pointers to beginners of this wonderful program.

well i would like someone to give me a tip on looping. if i have a clip in Ableton but want it to repeat only every second time, how do i do that ?
to clrify, the effect i'm afterwould be if the clip had an equal, but silent, part at the end of the clip so it doesn't loop as often. i know you can halve the length, but not double it beyond the end...
know what i mean ?

Im away from my computer at the moment so I cant give precise information.
If you are using Live 3 the easist way to make a loop play once every 2 plays is to...
1. Highlight the loop you want to do this on so that the clip information comes up.
2. Look for "loop" button on the far right. Switch it off. The sample waveform will disopear.
3. Above the "loop" button should be drop down menu. Select mixer.
4. Below that should be a drop down menu. Select volume.
5. Along the top, near the transport keys there is a pen tool. Select it.
6. Change the time quantisation to its lowest setting.
7. Back to where the clip information. Along the top of that window should be the original length of the clip. Bring your cursor to the right. It should scroll along.
8. The clip sample box should now show just a colour. Draw on it. Take it down to 0 for the original start and finish of your loop.
9. Drag the loop end so that it is twice the original length.
What will now happen is the first time you select this loop it will play sient for the first time and silent for the second time. It will keep douing this until you stop it. This technique can also be used for other things.
Experiment
If you have trouble following what I have written look up loops, clip automation and envelopes in the manual.
Have fun

thanks for the info - most appreciated - even if the method seems a bit complex for a pretty simple idea....

I did a set that would have rocked but I had some problems and Im not sure why
I used both types of automation
It seemed that every time I dropped in a loop from the mixer it seemed to take it some time to get into sync kinda hurting the qaulity of my performance. Is this a buffering problem? Is there some way of avoiding this
I have to say that this was the most fun I have had performing but the fact some things were off kinda sucked. sounded like a dj train reck then eventually evened itself out. HELP!!!!
im running a ibook g3 @ 384ram live 1.5 and cant afford an update anytime soon.
Also any ideas on multi tasking, i.e. mixing something in on hardware and doing effects at the same time.
I do have an oxygen8 midi controller
thinking about using junxion and a game controller for midi tweaks

Yeah, as eviltez said, you just unlink the volume env and mute what would be the second, repeated part, so you get it repeating every other instance.Cabinfever wrote:well i would like someone to give me a tip on looping. if i have a clip in Ableton but want it to repeat only every second time, how do i do that ?

btw, I'm currently selling a copy of live on ebay here. It was awarded to me, but after I had already shelled out for it, unfortunately. It's currently at £102.
Live 4 is coming soon, and looks to address many of the issues and feature needs of v3. Looks promising.

I was able to turn up my buffering to resolve the out of sync behavior in live. Sounds good
I had neglected before using my midi controller with live but decided, hey lets see what we can do. I used the keys to trigger the mutes thats some big fun.
Im definantly pinching the pennies for 4 and now i feel like a new midi controller is in order. Is anyone using the Evolution UC-33e? looks gorgeous. curious how well it would work with LIVE.
Considering not using a mixer with live. how is that working with people? Feels like it would be a shame not using all my outs on my soundcard but I notice Im not really using the EQs as is.

whats up man I'm glad you got it sorted but I didn't think it was a buffering problem but a clip triggering quantize setting problem, like always make
sure the clips you are triggering are set for the appropriate quantize in relation to your song.
you've got the song master quantize setting and you've got the individual clips setting, so you could have clips triggering every bar, or 16th note, 32nd, none, or what ever and when you trigger the clip it doesn't play until whatever you've set it to come in as, and if it's different than another clip then they won't trigger at the same time.
nother plug for dave hill jr.book it's very good. I gave mine to a friend and wish I still had it.

hi
i want to record the vst audio instruments output in ableton live, using for example minihost (if rewire would be possible). can you tell me any vsti-host that can be run in rewire slave mode with live as rewire master. i would be very happy if that would be possible
bye

Better to bump an old subject than start yet another ableton thread.
Anyone try using this bit of kit as a remix/dj performance tool.
I read the tutorial over at Ableton and they talk about putting warp markers in on every beat...With a ten-minute track that could take years!
Do you guys think this is what Ritchi Hawtin, BT and Sasha actually do or is there some sort of tempo stretching thing I'm over looking (comparable to the pitch slider on a proper turntable)...
I warp-marked two of my vinyl tracks to try this tutorial out and even though I felt like I was spot on with the markings, the tempo did drift about two minutes into it. (Yes, most DJs would mix out of a track by 2 minutes, but the point would be to have two tracks running simultaneously the whole time and use Abletons effects to manipulate the song).
Any other tips...I've read EVERYTHING on the ableton site and wish to learn more.
Cheers
