Just wondered if anyone really does hate it that much - I know it's a pretty common thing here to hate on it for the laughs, but is it really that bad?

I know I don't really hate it, and there's quite a bit that I actually like. There, I've said it!

I like it, not all stuff but some Psytrance or Full-On stuff. Not to mention that today there is a lot overlap between trance and other styles.

I love psychedelic + Goa trance, and all associated sub-grenres. Acid trance.

Can't claim to "hate" any type of music, just choose not to listen to it. Mainly that would be generic pop music, opera and country music

Any music with a twisted edge I'll pursue.

My opinion of trance is probably formed by the commercial stuff which you hear here and there... and I can't dance to something that's musically stupid, it's a genetic defect of mine. So I guess I can combine this answer with a question:

is there musically intelligent trance out there? If there is, there's a good chance I'd like it, cause I'm not generally opposed to any genre (excepting modern German Volksmusik and Schlager).

I dont hate any form of music.

There is a swathe of it I dont want to listen to. Somehow, though, I can manage to not like something without hating it, although I know that that sort of thing is pretty much heresy round here.

Not at all. In fact, I think Trance is one of the finest forms of EDM.

I miss the 98-2003 period so much.

That was pretty much where I was coming from. There's almost nothing that I could say I hate, and even if I take the piss out of something, it doesn't even mean I dislike it.

I think part of the problem with trance is the "how do I make a track that is an exact replica of XYZ" type threads, which the majority of the time seem to be trance...producers (sic)...asking the question. It's too easy a target...

well, yeah, although to be fair, its all tediously monotonous uninspired dance music subgenres which are prone to that.

im sure it carries in to other things as well, though. guitar forums are probably rife with 'what black nail varnish i need for teh proper emo riff'

and cookery forums probably froth over with

'teh sous vide is too expensive, the maker are ripoff from me, how i get teh proper cook with my kettle and some binbags'

The main problem with trance - but it's also an asset in some ways - is the familiarity of certain sounds. The familiarity of these sounds helps with the trance feeling (i.e. trancing out to the music on the dance floor).

For example, it's kind of expected that there will be a dissonant FM riser at various points throughout a progressive trance set. The best producers mess with this formula and do something unique, but it's also why people new to writing this type of music are so convinced they need to make "this exact sound" (whatever it is).

Not really "rules" but certainly an aspect of the music ...

Honestly, now the horrors of bigroom 'EDM' house have been made apparent, the transgressions of both Trance and the worst of the 00-ies cookie-cutter 'IDM' all added together can never seem terrible again.

Personally, I wish people would ditch the genre thing until after the music's finished. Electronic music has mostly become "pick a template and colour it in", and now people are using fill tools rather than actually bother wasting time filling it in manually. I mean it's not like music is some kind of pilgrimage or journey, right? Just get me results so I can move on!

Do you REALLY hate tarnce/tracne?
