I wouldn't want to conclusively hate something just out of a genre tag, but everything I've heard under that label has been totally stupid, all of it the same as though the people that choose it are mindless drones.

I honestly cannot tell different flavors of trance apart.

Based on other genres I'm guessing that I like some trance without realizing that's what it is. :hihi: But when friends recommend specific trance musicians or internet radio stations to me, I just find it all so dull. I'd rather listen to it than whatever pop garbage happens to be on in stores and restaurants at almost any given time, but I'd rather listen to the sound of an electric fan than either of those. Better yet, Nigella Lawson reading a recipe.

... or the "all of it the same" aspect (mindless repetitiveness) is a feature, not a bug i.e. it serves a purpose that not everyone "gets" (because they are put off by the feature, and so don't explore it further).

Oh, I'm sure it is a feature. I think the rhetoric 'you don't get it' is not persuading anybody to something that is demonstrably stupider than what they can use. "explore it further", yeah, I would need a lot of mind-numbing substances for that, no, a full lobotomy and even then. Don't insult our intelligence with gestures like that. Or 'serves a purpose'; you have to realize that you're trying to talk around what it is as music with that. Ulterior purpose = bullshit.

It's not just that is it 'repetitive', it is that there is the same exact limit to the vocabulary every time. It's the opposite of creative, I don't think it can be progged up or disguised. If it serves a social function, fine, as music I think I know what it does pretty exactly and it is pablum. I don't think I'm missing anything here.

I really like some of it, most of it's OK, some of it totally sucks.

As to vurt's attitude [f**k your genre], there are adherences to genre that are just completely suspect, the genre has attributes that everyone has to exactly do in order to fit in, there is a conformity that obliterates creativity after a point.

One of my top fans has shared with me that he's really opposed to 'blues' and while I have issues with that, if he means doing this 12-bar blues schtick every time like it's absolutely de rigeur I think I might respect that stance.

You can use a container and be fluid inside that, but I think this one might be too restrictive, I see people in such uniformity here it strikes me as disturbing/depressing.

I was specifically trying to avoid the "don't get it" argument by placing get in quotes, and stating the someone may not be inclined to explore further for a variety of reasons.

That's fine! Getting it or not isn't terribly important.

Some of the music might be classed as insipid, but equally some is pretty amazing. Maybe not as amazing as Bach or Miles Davis, but still pretty solid music. Sure it has to fit within certain boundaries, and to some this might seem boring, but then Jazz also has these constraints - otherwise it's not "jazz" - and some people certainly do find jazz boring.

Also, the social aspect certainly should not be ignored IMHO. By surrounding ourselves with "easy to digest" music, other forms of creativity take hold, specifically among the audience. This promotes social interaction by removing normal social barriers present in every day life.

If I compare this to the long history of regular band gigs I've attended, the social aspect of trance parties is absolutely more appealing (to me).

I suppose this assumes being social is a desirable trait, not everyone wants to be ... which is also fine.

Andy.

I think there are certainly difficulties in getting the genre if you come from a background that has excluded this type of music deliberately. While not the only approach, there's certainly the element of going to a club, rave, festival, etc. (chemically enhanced or not) that enlightens. Listening to it with a musically critical ear is probably never going to give anyone any clue what appeals about it.

Post

When I listen to trance (which I do rarely), I listen to Tag's Trip of Soma FM where I find pretty good trance songs...

I neither need any chemical enhancements nor permanent musical analyzing to listen to it... But I couldn't listen a whole week to it, just one evening or two.

I was a serious House head party kid before the Trance invasion in the US. So I am incapable of anything but a knee jerk point-and-laugh when it comes to Trance and Hard House.

Although, I guess Id admit that its really just the poppy, happy assed, 'uplifting', 'euphoric' type stuff that really grates me. That stuff, I honestly cant stand. I really hate everything about it. Sonically, technically, emotionally, historically...
But the darker stuff that is a little less 'hands in the air' is ok. The closer it sounds to old school Techno, the more I can handle it.
