Programming Drums: What do you use and why?

FL Studio is really powerful for drums programming, my 2 cents.
With a little bit of work you can even come up with a real "human" feel.

You can get some amazing sounds from both Reason and FLstudio, and you can get a human feel quite easily too.
But its not just your program that will effect the human feel - Its the samples too.
Try the NSKit7 - Quite easy to get a human drumming away in a sequencer with that.

I think Fruity Loops (and I believe Orion as well) is good for programming, because - as mentioned - you can see the beat you're programming, in a similar way as in drum notation.
But that goes for the piano roll in Logic and Cubase as well, and those are less loop-oriented, which is better, I think.
Reason is also nice, because it has a pretty piano roll for the drum computer. The step sequencer shows only the patern of one instrument at the time, which can be a drawback. But Redrum doesn't let you use layered samples, and that is very limiting if you want to make lively and lifelike sounding drums.
So I would recommend using a sampler like Battery or DR-008 in combination with a piano roll editor, so you have full control over dynamics. Dr-008 offers more options, but I use Battery because it gives an instant overview of the kit you're working with.

for some realsitc acoustic drums in FL, grab a load of different kicks, snares and highhats layer them as such and set them to be played randomly. Program your beat and hit play. Its amazing how realistic it can sound and you never get the same loop twice, depending on how many sample you used.

If you want to experiment, and use the loops you have,"making Waves"is a way to get off the beatentrack a bit.
Making waves is a sample seqr where you can edit your existing drm loops in various ways to get some interesting results...for what that is worth to you.
If your handy with wires and solder, there`s a post at KVR where someone shows how to make your own 8piece midi drm set.
(Sorry,I`d have the address, but i`m writing this, and it`s not convenient at the moment.)
Your own midi drms is the easiest, fastest, way to input midi drm notes.

Logic's my fav. The exs has this nice feature where you can swap samples on the fly in the file loading dialog box.
Live 4 is gonna be a wicked tool to check out though. Amazing possibilities in a simple to use interface.

Not so. You can use layered samples in the NN-XT sampler and use the ReDrum to trigger them via the gate outputs on the back of the rack. But Redrum doesn't let you use layered samples, and that is very limiting if you want to make lively and lifelike sounding drums.

I´d say that Reason is the most powerfull app because it´s completely modular...Terror Twinkie wrote:Not so.
