Ach, it's not for me I guess. I gave it a fair chance, but there's nothing really compelling about it, neither rhythmically nor harmonically. And there's a fair amount of kitsch in trance music, apparently. Bright sounds, tons of reverb, and all the Sylenth1 presets (searing leads! huge pads!) that I avoid like the plague.

Guess I'm off the bus... but I like to dance, just not to this stuff.

its not music to be sat and listened to at home alone, its music for a gathering of people, until youve stood in a field with a hundred thousand other folk till dawn i doubt you will find trance alluring in any meaningful way.
yeah, there are odd exceptions to this rule, i love a bit of banco de gaia while im home alone for example, but on the whole it is indeed a tribal collective experience.

I think that is the case with all dance music.
You might like it/appreciate it...
But its impossible to really understand its mass appeal without experiencing it that way.

Needs wattage, people, dancing, drugs...
And once you have all that behind it, its like the most powerful thing going, these days.
Most of us have had it in our genes since Africa.

Not quite sure what you intended by posting that and making that statement, but it's certainly something I woudn't want to listen to again. I couldn't even get that far through it. To me it represents the worst in the genre.

Soccer is another great example. There are different reasons to hate it as well, mostly the retarded commercialism, but some people dislike it for the collective experience part.
It's one of these massive experiences that doesn't go along with the ideals of modern individualism. And well, it can be genuinely scary. Angry mobs are no fun, except maybe when you're completely immersed in the wave yourself.

Not gonna get too woo-wooey in here, i'll just say: it's a spiritual thang. And damn interesting.

The thing that turns me off a lot of this kind of trance is the incredibly over saturated mixing and mastering it must have gone through. The track in question has some half decent chord progressions and melody lines but it also sounds like it's been rendered through a ridiculous amount of saturation plugins. Consequently it's lost a lot of the weight, impact, dynamic - just sounds ghastly really - even more so if you crank the volume - and there's sooooo much more where that came from - ruined by production trends that will make it sound dated very, very quickly. Those Oliver Lieb tracks that bmrzycki posted still sound great because they're mixed and mastered well (as well as the fact they're great tracks ). Give it a try - crank the Airbase track and it kills your eardrums and makes you want to reach for a low pass filter. Crank the L.S.G track and it just sounds great - space, weight, dynamic, the high frequencies are where they need to be and no more...

They still sound better than volume ramped white noise - the pinnacle of unimaginative composition!! Yeah, there's always things that date in dance music.

A mate of mine wrote a good track (probably about 15 years back now) that I was going to release on my old netlabel. I was with him when he composed it and thought it was cool - electronica would be the best word to describe it - but by the time he brought it over to my place so I could master it and burn it to a cd he'd added about 100 cheesy reverse kicks, snare, cymbals, random sounds at the end of every 4 bar effing loop... I still released it - never did tell him what a hatchet job he'd done on it - boy it sounds super dated now...

Even the cheesiest of sounds have their place in the right context. TB-303 is a good example. Too much and the music takes on a certain vibe, but if the 303 comes in at just the right moment for a short period it's a lot of fun and evokes a certain feeling.

I absolutely love some of the old trance, such as, Art of Trance, Union Jack, Narcotics, Quietman, L.S.G., Terra Ferma. Especially when skilfully handled (and selected) by labels such as Platipus.

Terra Ferma's 'Turtle Crossing' is still one of my favourite albums ever.

I do have to admit that the use of certain chemicals at the start of my trance music exploration will most likely have shaped my fondness for that particular music. I would even go as far as to say that I got conditioned by it. I still get cold sweats listening to the "Best of Platipus" double CD, even when completely sober.
