I still like it, it is well produced and the mixing is good. The energy is there, it just feels outdated to me

Well, I don't know about that...

I'd say that '80 revivalism is very, verry current whereas the whole "ambient soundscape-as-film-score" genre is officially overdone and on it's way out.

...mind you, that's just what I get from the radio...listen to my bassline, then check out franz ferdinand or the rapture or the stills the sounds etc. etc.

...the ambient thing is just because it seems like every movie nowadays has it...I expect the reactionary movement and the return of the "Flash Gordon" soundtrack very soon.

I was *so* close to covering the main Flash theme this month!

But I figured that the way I'd cover it, it wouldn't sound sci-fi at all, and the young pups wouldn't "get it", so in an effort to pander to the voting public I opted for something else.

Of course, I'd already committed to doing it, and my wife won't let me out of it, so I'm bound to return to the idea next time a covers contest comes about. Combined with Matias' previous cover of "It's a Kind of Magic" (from Highlander), we just need someone to cover "One Vision" from Iron Eagle to complete the Queen Movie Cheese Trilogy!

But holy shit, Flash Gordon: my brother and I could never pass a music store keyboard section without playing all those wacky synth riffs from the score...

Ack! I knew I forgot something!

That's it. I'm deleting my entry and replacing it with a moody ambient soundscape, "Richly evoking the pathos and alienation of a distopian future", while still not being anything a person could whistle.

It'll be very dark...and moody...and dark...and ambient.

I’m with Sleek and Markleford! There’s nothing (I say NOTHING) more cheesy than someone passing off an acute case of today’s fashion trendiness as a vanguard of the future. If you don’t believe me check out any popular culture sci-fi stuff from the past 70 or 80 years. The more specific people try to predict what the future sounds or looks like the more wrong or at least naive they seem. Frankly that’s part of the appeal of older sci-fi to me. There’s a certain odd nostalgia in Dr. Who, Star Trek or older serials and movies. I suppose some of today’s offerings might age well enough to invoke a bit of sentimentality in future viewings. But so much of modern popular sci-fi (at least that which makes it to see TV or film) is hyper-credulous action or horror flicks that have little to do with speculative science or good original storytelling. There will be plenty who like these shows because they remind people of their childhood or something but beyond that, they will likely be forgotten.

Oh hell, after a time I guess it all will fade away. Most sci-fi doesn’t have a long shelf life does it?

BTW: Isn’t this contest supposed to be about “a theme for a science fiction movie?” I hear a lot of soundtracks but not much that I’d recognize as a theme.

Couldn't agree more. Loads of "press a key on a Crystal patch and hold it for 2.00 min." sort of tunes, which is good for background in a sci-fi movie, but hardly a "theme". Theme = some sort of melody doesn' it? Think of theme from e.g. Dr. Who, Star Trek and 2001.

Sorry for maybe too long post, but just for interest:

The word "theme" can have 2 meanings in film music, i.e. a theme in the classical opera (Wagner type) sense linked to specific scenes (or acts) or characters of the film, or secondly the so-called theme songs.

I'll quote from two of the leading scriptures in modern film music.

First, Jeff Rona in The Reel World says: "...there is virtually always a strong bond that links all the music together into a cohesive whole. The main bond in usually a theme. Theme can have more than one definition. It is traditionally a melody or phrase - though it can also be a unique sound or instrument, a certain beat, a riff, or a small set of chords - that link the parts of a film together."

Secondly, Richard Davis from Complete guide to film scoring on theme songs: "From the early days of sound films, producers realized the financial benefits of having a hit song. Not only could they entice more people into the theatre to see the film, but they could sell more records (CDs in modern times) and sheet music...."

From this you can really decide how you want to apply the theme for the month.

The way I interpret this is that you do not need a long melody. In fact, one of the most famous themes from a movie is the 2 bar dark vader theme from star wars. Everybody imediately recognise it and it serves the purpose. Another is the 5 (or so) bars from jaws. One of the best example of non melodic themes IMHO is from Matrix (the 1st) unable to speak theme.
