Gird yourself cos you're going to have shitloads more. Nostalgia ain't even what it used to be. Used to be nostalgia was romantic about previous eras - y'know, Georgians had more style, that kinda thing. Nowadays we can't even reminisce further back than last week.

I went shopping yesterday and bough a cheapie CD - 3 CDS boxed with Stranglers - Feline, Aural Sculpture and Dreamtime. Looking forward to playing them loud after I finsih work tomorrow morning, as I haven't heard them for ages. And I found myself thinking "maybe I wasted my money, because I know their old stuff was much better". And I remembered that they were brought out mid 80s. And I thought to myself...

I think the people who have the real argument were classic rockers. Once the 80's came, everything went downhill. IMO, the music today sucks just as bad as the 80's music.

I think now is better. More people have access to the means of production, comrades and that means more incompetent people as well as more brilliant people.

I don't know about this dumbing down 'in all walks of life'. My walk of life looks pretty much the same as it did in the 1980's, the naborhood is being gentrified and the tourists are crowding me some.
I see a lot to be optimistic about in pop music, and a lot of music happening in fusion of Arabic and Indian music with rock, jazz and electronica.

I think the information age has consequences in the particular, the confidence of people that are incompetent is encouraged by a sort of equalization they perceive through the instant access to information, a lot of which is not good information at all. I'm a bit taken aback by the lack of literacy I see all over the place, people that never read anything. And now I don't read either, really!

In the old days, people were much better at bitching and moaning about how terrible things were then and how much better they were in the REALLY old days. The fine art of complaining about the good ol' days is dead.
