Hello guys. Sorry for the long post, as I'm trying to make things easy to understand (at least I think I am). Just read the last paragraph to save your time :D

I would love to figure out the chords of my favourite songs with my ears (for my personal chord analysis and remixing), and not the internet. Of course, I failed miserably, and I checked on the internet, which leads me to relative pitch and ear training.

To start my ear training, I downloaded this app called 'My Ears' on my android phone, and there is this 5 exercise options:
- Intervals
- Chords
- Scales
- Melodies
- Chord progressions

I tried out intervals (determining if the two notes made are major or minor second), chords (determining if the chord played is major or minor chord), and chord press the correct chord progression after they played one, eg, ii-V-I is played and I have to press ii-V-I)

I figured out if I have to go through all of these it would take alots of time, and since I just want to figure chord progressions by ear, I can just practice chord progression in 'My Ears' right?

They're all potentially helpful for chord progressions:

- You use intervals to hear the skips in the bassline and the relation of the bass note to the song's key.

- Practicing chords will help you fill in which particular II-V-I is in the song - is it IIm7-V7-I? IIm9b5-Valt7-Im6?

- Scales will help you tell apart major chords from minor chords.

- Melodies will help follow the bassline around.

It's a psychological fact that agency is a pretty important part of human learning experience. That means the best way to do ear training is to grab a guitar or keyboard, and practice chords. ;) The kinesthetic component of actually creating the chords will help create the neural context for recognizing them in the future.
