Hi Guys, I've noticed that mostly on my computer my screen makes my eyes red and makes me very tired after seeting in front of it for more than a hour,
a friend which was at my place and sat in front of the screen had tears starting to drop from his eyes due to the screen.
My screen it iiyama 19" Vision Master Pro 451.
The resolution is 1024x768 , color quality 32 bit and the refresh rate is set to 75hz ( while I could set it as high as 120hz if I want ).
The distance I sit from the screen is 85cm.

What should I change so that sitting in front of the screen wont be as bad as it is now ? It sucks to sit in front of the computer screen for 2 hours and then to want to sleep because of a sudden tiredness.
Thanks in advanced

Couple things to try:
  • Get one of those screen film things. Helps reduce glare.

Try increasing the refresh rate to at least 85Hz.

Try adjusting the lighting in the room. Maybe you need a small reading lamp instead of just an overhead.

Try blinking. And don't lean in so damn close.

Have you had your eyes checked lately? Maybe you either need a) glasses or b) a new pair if you already have some. Or if you already wear glasses, maybe clean them. Even vague smudging can be killer on your eyes, what with the halo glow.

Try looking away from the screen once in a while. Every twenty minutes, get up, look away, stretch, etc.

Maybe you need a humidifier. Or eye drops.

Maybe change the colours of your Windows scheme to something you find easier on your eyes.
Hope some of that helps. I've been there before, some of that has worked for me in the past.

Cheers,
Steve

Put your hands above your head and step away from the monitor.....LOL

Seriously though..
A glare filter would probably help. Had the same problem and work and that cured it for me..
Also, turn down the brightness and/or contrast on the monitor a bit...
on the other hand, if you are having trouble focusing on the screen, going the other way might do the trick...

Thanks for the replies guys,
shamann, I've changed the refresh rate to 85hz and edelweiss, I'll go this week and buy a glare filter.
I'm stupid for not buying it years ago as this screen been f**king my eyes for years.
I hope the glare filter will help

You might want to see if there is a convergence that is calibratable.

CRT monitors can torture the eyes, LCD monitors might have a slower refresh but they save my eyes.

Eyestrain gives me headaches quicker than anything, and making music with headaches is no fun :o

if you _can_ set it to 120hz, why dont you just do it? running my monitor at 100hz (which is the highest hz i can get at 1280*1024) i can stare at it for 20 hours a day and its all good. i would recommend to run your system at the highest hz rate it allows you.

I think the problem is to many joints. I know when I smoke to many I get red eyes(sometimes tears) and I always get sleepy all of a sudden. I cut down on the cheeba and now all is fine with the eyes. :)
peace, love, and all thats funky!!

Definitly get an LCD screen. The improvement is enorrmous.

Also, I have found that different sequencer's color sceemes have a large effect. If you have to look at a white background for any length of time it will hurt your eyes.

As an example, spend some time on a website that uses black text on a white background and then switch over to KVR and see how your eyes relax. You can feel the relief.

Change the background color to a soft color if you can.

I use Tracktion and it's colors are very easy on my eyes. If I use some of the other hosts I have, my eyes start to hurt quikly.
I can work for hours with Tracktion with absolutely no eye trouble.

bright colors on a computer screen can really strain my eyes easily.. so I made some basic changes..

adjusting solid white (as on webpages) to default to a grey as well as adjusting the colors in windows..

I know 800x600 on my 17" gives me eye strain easily too, but 1024x768 doesnt (same refresh rate of 72) go figure..

so maybe try messing with the screen resolution too?

I had exactly the same problem a couple of years back. Got one of the first LCDs and my problems vanished immediately... sure was expensive back then, but nowadays, a good LCD is not that much more than a CRT and so much better healthwise...

Two words...BREAK REMINDER..this little application is simply fantastic and will provide you with a visual reminder (not obtrusive) to take a break. You can set how often you take a break in an hour.

I had similar problems they are all gone!

I do now use an LCD screen as they are better on your eyes.If you are using a CRT screen please get a screen filter / glare filter(they can remove up to 99% of radiation, but get Break Reminder anyway! Every musician can benefit from using this application and I have to say you will find yourself having to adjust to the safer approach it suggests to you when you use it but how valuable are your eyes to you?

Check it out here http://www.cheqsoft.com/break.html
