Might not do super saw but the Unison in DCAM synthsquad Strobe is pretty decent.

When I started this thread I wasn't convinced there was a good, easy-to-program, software alternative to the Virus's particular "hypersaw osc" sound that I'm so fond of. But thanks to your suggestions, I now have several plugin options at my disposal that won't occupy any precious real estate in my room.

Thanks to chk071's observation I revisited Sylenth1 and disabled "Retrig." This brought the sound much more in line with the other examples. I replaced the original audio file with the new version:

I also demoed and subsequently bought Spire and MUX. Turning into another expensive thread for me, but what's new. Also, I'm still gonna come out way ahead when I sell the Virus (which I'm perfectly comfortable doing now).

All these synths were pretty easy to program once I knew where they were coming from. (Although I'm still stumped by how Sylenth1's "filter" and "filter control" sections work together. That's why the filter opens up way earlier in the Sylenth1 example.)

Your soundcloud clips of the super saw comparison has been posted to /r/edmproduction on Reddit. I was wondering if you could also record that supersaw line with a few more plug-ins, such as Cakewalk Z3ta+ 2, u-he Zebra 2, Synapse Audio DUNE, or D16 Group LuSH-101. Thanks a ton for what you have done.

I hadn't planned to continue, as it was becoming an expensive exercise for me, but I'm just as interested in the results as anyone.

I'll look into what it would take to test the other plugs. I can live with plugs whose demo versions will let me play at least 16 bars without interruption, but I need to be able to save and recall patches, because I switch between DAWs a lot. Anyway, I will take a look.

I'll also record an example with the Blofeld.

Alchemy and Massive are the weakest... both a bit hollow and phasey sounding

Diva is the smoothest, especially in the attack. Sweet sounding

Virus, Spire, Sylenth and Mux all sound similar in character. Sharper attack and bright tone. I think the later 3 all emulate the Virus thus the similarity.

These comparisons are fun. I've always been fond of the supersaw sound, though I've never managed to fit it into my music anywhere. What kind of effects are being used in these examples? Just delay and reverb?

Yeah, I didn't want to use any of the synths' built-in effects, because those do vary in character and quality pretty wildly.

As far as each patch goes, I'm only using a single oscillator with the most generic Saw waveform it offers, a 2-pole LP filter, and then voicing/unison/stereo width options whenever available.

So, on each track I've got a delay insert. It's Waves Manny Marroquin delay, but nothing special; I turned all the effects off and made it just 1/4 note on L and 1/4D on R, I think. Each track also sends to an FX channel, where I've got NI RC 24. To render, I just solo the instrument I wish to export, and then I load the result into WaveLab to do a non-destructive "loudness normalize" to -18LUFS so all the clips have a consistent perceived volume.

Just posted a couple new ones (the Zebra and Z3TA demos were usable enough for me to make patches and render clips).

Okay, this really is my last update (I think).

The playlist now includes 2 hardware synths and 10 softsynths:

HW: Virus, Blofeld
SW: Alchemy, Diva, DUNE, LuSH-101, Massive, MUX, Spire, Sylenth1, Z3TA+, Zebra2

I re-recorded the Diva example with a higher voice count (had to switch into muti-proc mode) and tried to get it closer to the Virus, but simply wasn't able to make it as bright/fizzy as the Virus. (It's a great synth! I just wasn't able to reproduce that specific sound using only one OSC and the voicing parameters.)

Yah i listened to that entire test thing on shitty Dell studio laptop speakers and Zebra ended up sounding the best with Sylenth1 being second best.

Tried it with the HQ switch off that allows aliasing in the oscillator?

What's a good VSTi for supersaw/hypersaw patches?
