Does the average listener really care if its analog?

I have come to the conclusion that most people in the music industry don't care either. Because they are not there for the music...or are even any good at playing an instrument. They are there for the name recognition. They are there because all their friends are, they are there for the dunder head girls, they are there because they can't do anything else and get away with it. They are there for every reason except music. Thus the music "industry" killed itself and lay in a pool of it's own blood.
Hint for new comers: You will NEVER make money or fame or fortune in music. Of course people get their 15 minutes all the time, but it never lasts for long. They are, and you will be, forgotten as quickly as you show up on the scene. Replaced by the girl who is willing to take off that extra pair of something, so she can be a musician.

Well, it's not that there is the evil music industry one one side and the poor independent artists on the opposite side. There's much exchange! The world isn't black and white...

So you're saying EVERYBODY is an average listener?Tricky-Loops wrote:Well, the question was about the average LISTENER, not about the artist. The artist might have high standards regarding the style, purpose and quality of her/his music but for the listener only the end result counts. If you work half a year on a piece of elaborated music, and then nobody listens to it because it sounds too experimental, what's the sense of it? Okay, that you feel better as artist and you can call it "masterpiece"...
(And I don't mean your music in this case...)
The average listener is like the average human: an idiot. I wouldn't want to make music for them.

Well, I'm sorry to say that even some average people are listening to my everything-but-average-music...T-CM11 wrote:So you're saying EVERYBODY is an average listener?Tricky-Loops wrote:Well, the question was about the average LISTENER, not about the artist. And if you make a gig or even a big concert, you cannot sort out all average people, either...

Once we resolve this, we can tackle the following questions:
- Does the average listener care if you use presets/loop packs?
- Are analog presets/loop packs better than handmade digital sounds?

Of, course, no. They don't care if the end result is a superior tune. Did people care that muddy waters was sometimes just recasting delta tunes? No... sometimes that made it even better. It's all in the handling. But we all know this...Frantz wrote:Once we resolve this, we can tackle the following questions:

Does the average listener really care if its analog?
But of course, is not it obvious?

Yes. They will hunt you down like a dog.Frantz wrote:Once we resolve this, we can tackle the following questions:

Both are sins*. See answer above for result.Frantz wrote: [*]Are analog presets/loop packs better than handmade digital sounds?[/list]
* Unless the loop/breakbeat has been lovingly crate dug from the back of a vintage vinyl store. In which case it is all that is holy.

It's a bit of a silly question really. It's like saying does a person care whether a t-shirt is made of 100% cotton or 90% cotton and 10% something else - the person just sees a t-shirt. When an average listener hears a piece of music they don't hear a bunch of individual instruments all doing something different and then being summed into a stereo mix - they hear a song. So I guess the answer to the OP is 'No' the average listener probably doesn't care. The person who made the song will care deeply though - they will use whatever tools they need to create the song. I'm guessing this thread is all about whether or not the thread starter feels the need to buy an analogue synth - just go with what ya heart is tellin' ya! (the answer is: yes, buy an analogue synth btw

One area where listeners apparently do (or did) care was in classical. I've not checked any recent ones but CDs used to advertise prominently whether the recording was AAD, ADD or DDD.
In classical, analogue BTW has been bad for years unless you're some rich guy with a bad case of confirmation bias: http://www.theguardian.com/music/2013/m ... -recording

I am not so sure I even want the analog sound, all I want is for the result to sound good and pleasant to my ears. For some sounds like pads a purely analog sound is not really ideal, too thin somehow.V0RT3X wrote:Serious question. Do you think all the people who listen to music composed with Access Viruses, Nord Leads, Waldorfs etc actually care ??
The only analog things I want from synths is the user interface and parameters/programming.

Which is the greater sin? We need moral guidance on this question.Gamma-UT wrote:Both are sins*.Frantz wrote:

The average listener? Probably will have no idea what you're talking about.
The discerning listener? Probably wouldn't be able to tell anyway, unless there's bad aliasing.

That would be an ecumenical matter.Frantz wrote:Which is the greater sin? We need moral guidance on this question.Gamma-UT wrote: Both are sins*.
But take heed of the writings of Beathuselah: "If a sinner comes before you and says 'I have created dem phat beatz with software but they were programmed by my own wicked hand without the aid of loops, can I claim redemption?', speak unto him that redemption may only be claimed by the hand programming of ye ancient hallowed modular unsullied by DCO and that no redemption be possible while the sinner cleaves to either digital or loop, unless it is direct from the pure source of the Obscure Mighty Vinyl section of only the dustiest record shoppes. All praise the sawtooth."

Is this a masterpiece just because it's made with an analog Casio VL-1?
