Does the average listener really care if its analog?

I assume it depends on the age of the listener. Older people like me who grew up and liked the good old sound are a bit repelled by the way music sounds today.
But young people who don't know anything else might not even think about things like that.

Thank you for your wise words. I will cherish them always.Gamma-UT wrote: But take heed of the writings of Beathuselah: "If a sinner comes before you and says 'I have created dem phat beatz with software but they were programmed by my own wicked hand without the aid of loops, can I claim redemption?', speak unto him that redemption may only be claimed by the hand programming of ye ancient hallowed modular unsullied by DCO and that no redemption be possible while the sinner cleaves to either digital or loop, unless it is direct from the pure source of the Obscure Mighty Vinyl section of only the dustiest record shoppes. All praise the sawtooth."

I don't consider myself 'the average listener', but as a listener I only care about the end result. Yes, I'm interested in how it was made, but I'm not going to keep listening to something I don't like just because it has a nice bassline or a cool comb filtered granular pluck in it.
As a musician, I care about what I care for. And if nobody likes what I make, then I'll just continue - but maybe stop recording it.

It's a worrisome collusion of things. Boils down to, what magic key can i use to make average listener realize i am a genius? But at the same time, don't care what average listener thinks because they are too stupid to realize already that I'm a genius. I worry that's what the true root of these questions are.
nice, with ghost of kurt cobain haunting the electronics. i can see the point, but after the point was made... f**k that. make music?

The formula was simple in the old days. You needed three articles in the music papers that proclaimed you were a genius. Then it became an irrefutable fact that you were a genius. The role of publicists and record companies was to promote this idea. The actual quality of the music was completely irrelevant.lectrixboogaloo wrote:Boils down to, what magic key can i use to make average listener realize i am a genius?
The formula in the post-record company era is yet to be determined.

Gotta say these words cover my opinion very well too. I don't care what specific tech is used, except my musician's curiosity. As a listener, if I enjoy it, it could be made with a nose flute, butt trumpet, and bone saw for all it matters. I care about musicianship and enjoyment well before I care about what era of tech was used.T-CM11 wrote:I don't consider myself 'the average listener', but as a listener I only care about the end result. If it feels like work, it's time for a break(beat)!Sendy wrote:...art is something, in my humble opinion, deeper than that, it's a coping mechanism. I think a lot of modern music is actually made using professional romplers, which offer all kinds of sounds, e.g. from real instruments, old analog hardware and modern instruments, sounds which might be manipulated in addition to that using romplers' synth features. So where to draw the line? Is a sampled Minimoog analog or digital?V0RT3X wrote:Serious question. Do you think all the people who listen to music composed with Access Viruses, Nord Leads, Waldorfs etc actually care ??

Not sure if you're agreeing with me, or equating a sense of urgency that I mentioned with a sense of duty - asin work. I'd say artists create more as a way of making sense of the world, staying sane.Tricky-Loops wrote:If it feels like work, it's time for a break(beat)!Sendy wrote:...art is something, in my humble opinion, deeper than that, it's a coping mechanism. "Art is not a mirror to reflect the world, but a hammer with which to shape it." - Someone said this. don't know who but it rings true to me. (Actually I saw it written on the set of the Antiques Roadshow the other day, and thought it was neat, lol).
But then, sometimes I get the impression that the music I'm making is being beamed back in time from my future self living in a utopia at the end of time. Some people find such an idea stupid but I find it beautiful, and it brings out certain things in my music that I find desirable, so I stick to it. Who cares if it's "actually" true (whatever that means!). My music is heavily entwined with my dreams and imagination and I'd like to keep it that way. The people thinking "stab, pad, bassline, vocal clip" - setting up academies where they churn out middle of the road EDM? I'm at war with these people
When it comes to being a bit eccentric, I'm beyond caring. It's an artist's job to think OUTSIDE the box. In the early 2000s I got mocked for openly admitting that I was listening to my own and other music backwards and at different speeds, trying to create phrases that could make sense backwards and forwards - in an attempt to transcend time. I got laughed down, but now BoC are talking about this stuff and the normals/followers are lapping it up.

Most people making music today are not really artists in my view.
Few have that passion and maybe even psychological issues people such as Hendrix had.

I don't make middle of the road EDM, it's too dangerous. Too many people (driving around)! I prefer making EDM in the underground!Sendy wrote:The people thinking "stab, pad, bassline, vocal clip" - setting up academies where they churn out middle of the road EDM? They only care if they like it but they won't know why some of it sounds good.

Because there is no 'good' (or bad). It's all subjective opinion & taste, and for most people (also) culturally determined.Kaboom75 wrote:They only care if they like it but they won't know why some of it sounds good.

One of my favourite shows was "The Outer Limits" from the 90s. It had great stories and great endings, but always looked and sounded a little under-budget. The look was obviously cheap sets, but I don't think all those really bad trumpets and strings from synths trying to emulate an orchestra could've sound any worse coming from an AITB system today.
