That's why I generally prefer breakbeat-style beats to 4-on-the-floor kicks. They're lighter so you can do more with them, they don't dominate the track, and they're better for syncopations.Faceless_ wrote:Yes, but I like the feeling of speed as in techno and loopsSendy wrote:Have you met my good friend, ambient music?
I quite like techno influenced tracks where they used a light breakbeat, like Papua New Guinea.
Not sure if you'd class the soft bass drum in some breakbeats as a kick.

I played in as a Pick of The Week in my radioshow back in 2008. Great memories

This track is fantastic. That said, I'm curious why you're looking for music without kicks? I'm asking because why matters? I would play this track, for example, smack in the middle of a house set that was very much full of kicks. The extended deep break would go over well. There are a lot of house tracks that take advantage of this directly and have very long intros that are without kick. If you are looking for this kind of track because they are useful in a DJ set, then those tracks would be interesting to you. If you are just looking for tracks that don't have kick drums because you don't like kicks, then, well they would be less interesting.Faceless_ wrote:Nice tracks THX! My DJ style is all about long mixes and filters and I regularly turn a track that has kicks to one that just has klicks by using a high pass filter. It's not just about on or off, it's about the degree to which a kick kicks. You can bring back in just a little more and it really pushes the groove in the room.
And yes, I would consider FSOL's track to have a soft kick and for that there are really countless records from the 90s that did not feature 909, but were heavily driven by 808 breakbeats.
Here's a track that I regularly (used to) play over the top of something another record with a beat.
There's a lot of stuff in the "chill techno" genre that has very muted kicks or, in some cases none. Here's a track that's embedded in a playlist of a bunch of tracks from theorem.
Here's Theorem's (Dale Lawrence) soundcloud page:

Music without a kick?
World Of Numbers by Reizikini, pretty much.

During the breakbeat part at least though.
