We've booked a beach/resort/sun holiday for May. Oh joy. My idea of hell.
Apparantly, we just lay there all day

Kill me now.

Anyway, to pass the time I'll need to be constructive and this involves music. No surprise.

Possible options I've considered thus far:

- iPad: Not great in the sun, and I'm yet to be convinced they're anything other than toys for music making. If that comment angers you then sorry, but just focus on the sun issue.

- Netbook/Laptop: Great option, but just like the iPad not great in sun.

- Akai MPC500/1000: Not bad, but I would need to load it to the brim with samples beforehand and there's no synthesis.

- TT303: Mucho fun, but extremely limited.

- Korg Volca's: Much like the TT, but extremely limited on their own. And I'm not about to look like a twat connecting multiple devices and a mixer while sitting on a pool side lounge.

- Teenage Engineering OP1: Way too expensive. My budget is ~£300/400?

Grrrrr! Thoughts/suggestions?

iPad is the only option imo.

With Audiobus 2 it's actually turning into a pretty powerful music making system that can be easily integrated into the studio on your return.

There are some fantastic audio apps/synths/samplers out there for it now.

Waldorf Nave and AniMoog for starters!

Ok so edumucate me on this. I would sequence Nave or AniMoog with something like FL Studio?

And I only have an iPad 1. Yes remember those old things.

Think I'm gonna start with Cubasis.
Should be a shallow learning curve from Cubase.

There's a few YT videos on Audiobus 2, although I don't know how it's integrated with sequencers.

Also look at Thor, Samplr and the Lemur app. There's tons of stuff that you could use to integrate into the studio tbh.

I do think you'd need to upgrade the iPad though, some of the apps would smash the CPU in your one.

You could always keep the iPad 1 as a Lemur controller though

You should be able to demo some of these on your iPad I think.

made on an iPad 2 whilst on a week away from home using Nave, animoog, and some other crazy stuff. It's perfectly doable.

I would recommend either:

An Android tablet + Caustic 3
A Yamaha QY10/QY20/OY70 or QY100 (very old option but fun)
Nintendo 3DS + Korg M01D (£20?)

My recommendation would be to avoid everything including music, and just enjoy the holiday. You'll come back refreshed with lots of new ideas.

I've thought about this multiple times, but I'd always choose real knobs over a touch display.

If you play guitar at all, the guitalele is THE portable instrument. It's just large enough to be playable, just small enough to be portable, sounds better than a uke, and damn if it just doesn't want you to pick it up play it.

Here's a video of a kid playing a guitalele with a much better tone than mine.

Yeah, here's mine, cheap, not as great a tone, but, a lot of fun.

BTW: I agree with him about practice. I haven't played guitar more than once a month or so for years but since I got this I play something every day. It sits by the couch and if I want to jam something with what's on the tube I just pick it up. My finger picking has improved a lot, it still sucks, but it's way better than what it used to be.

I got it to have something musical at burning man with me. I had my laptop as well. Never turned the laptop on once, but I walked around all day with this thing jamming at will.
