(Also: I'm Accused of lying about Linux—it boots, runs my pro audio workflow, stays stable, updates--though yearly dismissed as “niche”. Yet I'm the deluded one.)

I forgot about a lot of good things. Check out this thread for a lot of free apps (including Garageband!). Make sure they are compatible with your iPad 1 first though.

Are you sure gamecat666? The youtube pages don't indicate this. They only indicate the iOS minimums and that an iPad is required...

from the app store:
Caustic 3:
Compatibility: Requires iOS 6.0 or later
Audiobus:
Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later
Ipad 1 one only runs iOS 5.1, you cannot upgrade it any higher.

I stand corrected. I was thinking the iPad 1 could run iOS 6.x..... Sorry Mushy Mushy, Gamecat666 is correct. The apps I recommended to you won't work... I'll do some looking and see if I can find some other recommendations for you...

OK, I found one even better! BeatMaker 2 is iOS 5 compatible!!!! That is a whole studio, including audio tracks!! This should work for you, AND is complete. Many people consider it one of the top three audio apps for composing in:
Cubasis
Auria
BeatMaker 2
Not necessarily in any particular order..
OK, I now recommend this for you above all the others I have mentioned thus far. This looks like it will do everything you want it to do and more!

Please let me know how it goes!!! And this time, I really do hope I've been helpful!

I personally prefer your suggestion of 'nanostudio'. Always found it a much friendlier environment, and prefer having the eden synth. 'Beatmaker' is great, but the workflow puts me off a littleaudiojunkie wrote:OK, I found one even better! BeatMaker 2 is iOS 5 compatible!!!! That is a whole studio, including audio tracks!! As for my previous answer ?? Didn't realise the op had an ipad 1
And i still think it worth checking out apps that make good use of the touch paradigm

Yeah, I mentioned BeatMaker2 as a better solution mainly for the Audio tracks and Audiobus/IAA implementation. I agree that the sound from Eden is much better than the crappy bloatware factory samples in Beatmaker2.
I just felt that BeatMaker2 was a more "complete" solution, but either would do nicely for an iPad 1.

i just don't imagine trying to use audiobus with anything worthwhile into beatmaker being anything but a shedload of frustrationaudiojunkie wrote:Yeah, I mentioned BeatMaker2 as a better solution mainly for the Audio tracks and Audiobus/IAA implementation. i think the bloat is what always put me off bm2, despite their being some pretty good sounds in some of the kits

Makes good sense. I guess I was a little put off by the lack of Audiobus....but I think the developer finally released an update to include it, didn't he?

Thanks guys.
And apologies for my tardy replies. There's been a LOT going on lately.
I'll give these replies the attention they deserve later tonight.

However, I do have 2x iPhone 5's at my disposal as well.
Maybe I can use some of your suggested apps after all.
