I'm looking for midi player that will display the musical notes on the staff as it plays. I'd like to be able to use the sounds from my VSTi instruments as it plays.

Logic and Cubase have this feature. There maybe others.

You can also try Sibelius, and import the midi.

This looks amazing - I think I could import midi but the sound would be locked into the sounds of Guitar Pro.

GuitarPro has a pretty good sound engine. Much better then your average "midi" player or simple notation software. It uses RSE for the guitar/bass sounds and the sound engine for the non guitar/bass instruments is Coyote Forte.

Though you aren't going to get the RSE or Coyote with the demo.

The world of available midi songs is diminishing however the world of gp format is expanding. Arobas (makers of guitar pro) also have a pay service with the largest selection of tab software on the net.

tux is free I'll grant you that.

The sound is quite terrible as is the display. It's just very very hard to read and lacks a lot of features.

Lots of great info but I guess none of the myriad of midi players can play my VSTi virtual synths...???

perhaps this is not the best forum to ask this question? Maybe hosts or production techniques or even everything else...you have got so few responses you might do better asking elsewhere here at KvR
