Hi,
Just letting you know that the website is getting a complete redo, and should be going live Sunday (Apr 13) or Monday. We'll try to avoid downtime, but it's likely to be unavailable for a brief interval. Whole new look and new content as well.

More on this later, but it looks like the new site is beginning to show up at www.exponentialaudio.com. It could take a little while for it to propagate through global DNS, but we're on our way!

The website redesign looks great, and the graphic redesign of Phoenix and R2 looks great as well. Nice work Michael!

Nice looking site design, Michael. Congrats on that.
Any chance on a "site redesign sale", specifically on the surround versions? I trial'ed both of them before v2.0, and they didn't like REAPER too well then (outputs were not where they were supposed to be in 5.1)
Thanks!

Hi and thanks for your remarks. No sale on the immediate horizon, I'm afraid (still recovering from the last one).
Reaper is problematic, although I'm thinking about what I might do. The issue is that--unlike most other DAWs supporting surround--Reaper is free-form, allowing the user to route the feeds into the plugin anyway they like. In other DAWs--Nuendo, ProTools, Logic, etc--the routing is fixed (even though external routing can still go where you like it).
This routing issue is quite important, since it matters greatly that the correct inputs go to where they're supposed to be in the plugins. I've communicated this to Cockos, but they've chosen not to respond. That's too bad: Reaper is a nice DAW in many ways, but its support of surround is hobbyist-class. I'm not going to complicate the UI of my plugins to control the routing channel by channel--it adds a layer of ugliness that the majority of DAWs just don't need.
If I decide to support Reaper formally, I'm afraid I'm just going to have to publish an internal format (likely to be the Cubase/Nuendo routing) and just expect the user to route those signals accordingly. There may be a few other things involved. It's been a while since I looked.
But please feel free to add your remarks here.

Hello Michael,
Thanks so much for your response, and I'm very sorry to go so off topic on your thread here...
I've upped my surround config from 5.1 to 7.1, and I think things should be OK now in REAPER, since Phoenix and R2 surround inserted themselves into a 6 channel track as an 8 channel plug-in. Now that I would insert then on an 8 channel track, that should work. I just need to figure out how to demo R2 surround again on my iLok.

Why don't you sit tight for a week or two. What you were seeing at 5.1 is indicative of the issue and 7.1 will likely only mask it. The issue does require specific attention from me, using internal routing tables. There will be an update of surrounds in the next few weeks, and whenever I post betas would be the time for you to test it. Contact me then through my support page (not through KVR) and I can arrange to extend your demo.

Perfect. I'll contact you near the end of the month and see how things are looking (and sounding!) Thanks a bunch, Michael!

Michael, how do your surround versions expose outputs to hosts? REAPER has a routing matrix as well as a small matrix per plug-in where the user can set everything up for 5.1 or 7.1. It even has a plugin called ReaSurround which you can use to centralize all your routings for surround work. I have to be honest here, I've never used REAPER for surround work because that's not our specialty here at the studio but I'm pretty sure it's just a matter of doing a few track templates or even demo videos to accomplish what the user needs. REAPER routing is very good and you can do a lot with it, it just takes a bit of thinking to get things going.
By the way, congratulations on the new website design. It looks wonderful.

Hi David,
In a DAW like Nuendo or ProTools, the routing into a plugin is completely fixed--no matter how things are routed externally. This is ideal--it gives the user control of routing to external channels, but doesn't bother him with which buffer the center channel is in. This gives a completely dependable result. The Reaper approach seems to come from the days before surround plugins--when you had to paste a bunch of stereo plugs together. I greatly prefer the fixed approach. With the Reaper approach, you as the user have to spend extra time setting up internal plugin routing. And I as the vendor then have to spend more time explaining why the mix isn't right when the user has misrouted things. I am all in favor of giving power to the user, but not when the DAW provider has failed to provide necessary functionality.
But like I said earlier I may just adopt a fixed table and then politely suggest the user read the manual when they get the routing wrong. Having said that though, there are still things wrong with Reaper implementation on top of all that. In terms of surround, ProTools and Steinberg are still miles ahead.

Indeed, Nuendo is an exceptional case where surround is very good (not said by me but many collegues doing surround work here). REAPER tried to accomodate his routings capabilities to surround when version 4 was being developed and that's when ReaSurround showed up. I'll try to approach a couple of guys who use REAPER for surround work and ask them to contact you, I'm pretty sure they have quick steps to accomplish this so you can show that to your users (track templates come to mind, they're a strong point on REAPER). I'll get back to you via email.
