So why shouldn't I do the same? I'm not planning to produce mainstream stuff for the Billboard Charts. I'm making funny music, and if I ever should be in the Charts, then it's a side effect... But I don't want to sound like Avicii, I'm an independent artist - some music inspires me but I don't copy other songs. I'm not into cover bands even if they might get some bucks more...Kriminal wrote:thats all i do, if i got a million £ for my music that would be nice, but im not doing it for that, i do it cos i enjoy it.

This idealist/individualist approach can really get you stuck not doing anything if you take it too far. I know from experience.
I know krim can sound needlessly pissed off or sarcastic at times but not in this thread so far. You're fighting against thin air

All this "post belongs in x" never bothers me. I don't very often actually go into the forum so it never really registers which subforum it's in, I tend to keep an eye on the "latest posts" thing at the side there --->
Am I missing loads of interesting stuff then that comes and goes before I notice it?

No mocking me in my thread!
(I did look for Site Stuff but missed it, then figured it was a kind of social issue so it could go here)

Did you read the post of Sendy? This thread is about Sendy complaining about copycats. It isn't about Tricky-Loops and whether his unconventional music makes him rich or not...nasenmann wrote:He just made a point via a simple question.Tricky-Loops wrote:Instead of permanently attacking other people here, you could present your hit records and how much money you made with music... I didnt say you to HAVE to sound like avicii, or anyone, but its pointless trying to sound like nobody else, cos its impossible.Tricky-Loops wrote:So why shouldn't I do the same? The thread quickly moved past discussions of forums and n00bie behavior and now we're back to doing what we do best - beating each other up which happens in every KVR forum.Sendy wrote: (I did look for Site Stuff but missed it, then figured it was a kind of social issue so it could go here)

Not mocking you so much as finding the irony amusing. I know why you posted it here, but Frantz's comment just made me laugh.Sendy wrote:OY!robojam wrote:Frantz wrote:Exactly. Kriminal has a point actually. Which I'm now going to reiterate using more flowery language.
If you define what you do in terms of what other people aren't doing, that's pretty much the same thing as defining it in terms of that they ARE doing. The negative space isn't very far removed from the positive space.
It's also true that by trying to be as individualistic as possible, you run the risk of ending up as a stereotype. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.
Actual individualism is more like blocking out everything, and just making what you want to hear. Instead of trying to shake off similarities to "what's hot" out there, treat them as coincidences and refuse to respond with that reflex action of "get it off me!".
Ultimately, people will say you sound like someone else, that's just how most people talk about and percieve music.

I'm not sitting there listening to all 9.999 millions of bass lines in the universe just to NOT make a similar bass line. I cannot give you a guarantee that my music is 100 % unique and never heard in this universe. But I try to make music which is different from mainstream music. That's all. TRYING to avoid sounding like somebody else, TRYING to sound different. I don't have a 100 % uniqueness certification...Sendy wrote:If you define what you do in terms of what other people aren't doing, that's pretty much the same thing as defining it in terms of that they ARE doing. Even if it were impossible to make sounds that aren't already there - that doesn't mean that giving up and sounding like Avicii is the only way out...
