Does the note of the melody has to be same as the note of the drop?

Chords, scales, harmony, melody, etc.

Hello,
I am currently working on a progressive house track. I wanted to ask if the starting note of the drop has to be same as the note of the melody?
For instance, if my drop starts with d#, does the melody(the opening lead) has to contain d# in it?

Thanks

Simply no, not the melody as long as it's still in the original scale like d# minor or major.
Bass should have the root note at the beginning (as general rule, there are exceptions).

you can use every note of the given scale.

the first note of your melody should be also d#, or you could have a note from the same chord which in this case would be f# or a#.

If it sounds good to you, yes, otherwise, no.

A good rule of thumb for beginners is to do as d-s-m pointed out and start on the 1, 3 or 5 of the root note of the drop (or any accented beat), but, truth be told, you can use any note, though chances are it'll need to resolve pretty soon. 2, 4 and 7b are good choices because they suggest a sus2, sus4 and dominant 7th chord on the root.

as mentioned in the other thread you can use every note of the given scale of the chord - (in your case the scale of either d# min or maj) - that what scales are for.

Thankyou so much for replying everyone :D
One last question, if I have the drop at octave 2, can I have the melody at octave 3?

Using notes not in the scale you are writing in can be effective as well to add dissonance and build tension - but you obviously have to be very careful and selective on when you use an accidental to mix things up a bit.

The key here I think is just messing around and experimenting - there are lots of music theory rules - but as they say - rules were made to be broken.

Thanks guys for your support. I really appreciate it.
I have finally created the track https://soundcloud.com/rohan-dhawan/roh ... unabridged

It couldn't have been possible without your help. I would appreciate your feedbacks :)
Cheers.
