Is it worth reporting people who pirate software?

Since it seems like pirating is so rampant today, is it worth trying to make a difference? Recently, on a subreddit forum, there was a huge discussion about whether or not it was ok to give advice on pirating. I just said my views and defended the software developers, and I was downvoted so far my comment was hidden.
A lot of 14-21 year olds are on there, but still, is that normal? Maybe I am just naive to how common it is.
There are some very respectful developers on these sites having their stuff downloaded for free and it is kinda sad.

A few years ago Waves started sending people round studios to book recording time and ask if the studio uses Waves plug ins.
Any studios they found with cracked software got given the choice of paying up or going to court. Waves received quite a bit of flack from the recording industry for doing it.
If your going to start reporting people why stop at software ? Why not report people copying music, film, books, games, etc ?
Maybe you could get more people behind you reporting the banks and governments stealing our money ?

Some time ago I saw a blog who offered warez, I therefore contacted Google about stopping that, but the first question I get when reporting is if I am the copyright holder of the pirated software. As I am not that, Google will not do anything. It has to be the developer/copyright holder that reports any infringement.LimboLoves wrote:There are some very respectful developers on these sites having their stuff downloaded for free and it is kinda sad.
I found that rather weird, so I started a discussion about it in the forum, which unfortunately just ended up in one big argument last spring, so the whole experience trying to be a "whistleblower" left me with a bad taste in my mouth

Youtube (and therefore Google) make millions of dollars out of ad revenue on copyright content.
The entire industry is full of bullshit, hypocrisy and indifference.

First off, good for you for standing up. Stealing is stealing. Calling it 'pirating' in a weird way, IMHO, glamorizes it a bit. But you're taking stuff that doesn't belong to you, plain and simple.
And, yes, it's also wrong to steal music, film, books and games. Same thing.
However, while you may not agree with certain laws, generally speaking, banks and governments don't 'steal' your money. They get your money using laws that are on the books. Usually. Not to say that it DOESN'T happen, but when your money is taken by them illegally, you can, and should, report them as well.

therein lies the problem, how can we expect common man to act in a responsible manner when our governments are turning a blind eye or even joining in with corporate theft on such a grand scale?Acid Mitch wrote: Maybe you could get more people behind you reporting the banks and governments stealing our money ?

And it is not good logic to go with reasoning like "if they do it, why shouldn't I".
Because somebody else does something bad, doesn't give an excuse to do bad things.

seems to be an a**hole move by waves. I'm going to create my own software, charge 2000 a plugin, knowing no (sane) person will buy it, expecting some crackers to use illegal and then just go after them for my dough. Pay up or go to court

No matter the price, piracy is not an option. If the plugin isn't worth the price, don't frigging use it. Punish the vendor by buying from and empowering their competition.
And banpiracy wasn't about poor college kids. It was about actual commercial studios make actual revenue using stolen goods. I think it was a worthy pursuit, and they should have kept going.

This is the best argument to use against the "I couldn't afford it anyway" camp. It's true you probably wouldn't have bought that £200 compressor, but you sure as hell aren't going to buy Klanghelm's outstanding £15 one now you've torrented it.No matter the price, piracy is not an option. You really are a moron....a company has there software stolen, and they are in the wrong for finding ppl who steal it? I think its good work on their part.
What you are saying is, they charge a lot of money, so its ok to steal it. I wonder what you have on your computer....

By way of coincidence, a digression, I was checking the a news blog about the Orb, in which accordingly, Kris Weston has used the DMCA act to remove an article:
http://orb-news.blogspot.no/2014/03/the ... mment-form
Kind of intruiging, how the DMCA act can be used to remove an article? (was it just an article, it didn't include any sound clips ? )
