How do I know if my sample pack should be free or pay ware?

Right now I am making a train sfx pack with tons of percussion. This is my first pack and sounding good so far. I was wondering, should I set up a website and sell the pack? Or do donation ware? Do people ever donate?
Also, do you guys pay ppl to make demos or do them yourself?
Thanks!

If you feel it's good enough, I think you should feel quite comfortable charging for it, even if it is your first sample pack.
Sometimes developers might not charge as they aren't sure if people will pay out for a product from an unknown. But, if your price is reasonable and the demos show it is of good quality, there's no reason it shouldn't sell.
Best thing to do with demos is approach people you know and trust. I always do demos for my synth soundsets myself, as well as using fellow composers/producers I know well, because sometimes I want to make sure the sounds are eflected in the way I want them to be. And because, as a composer, I enjoy the process.
Sounds like a fun sample pack. Best of luck with it!

Instead of spending time setting up an outlet by yourself, you could for example sell via established portals like Sampleism: http://www.sampleism.com/help/faqLimboLoves wrote:Right now I am making a train sfx pack with tons of percussion. Wow that sounds like a great idea. Working full time and having to learn web design and paypal encription sounds tedious. I'll look into that.Numanoid wrote:Instead of spending time setting up an outlet by yourself, you could for example sell via established portals like Sampleism: http://www.sampleism.com/help/faqLimboLoves wrote:Right now I am making a train sfx pack with tons of percussion. I guess I'll try 5 to 10 dollars at the start and see if there is any interest.

They'll also help you a bit with promotion, as they ship out regular newsletters to subscribers (and also close to 2500 followers on Facebook ) about new additions and specials.LimboLoves wrote:Wow that sounds like a great idea. Yep, second what Numanoid says. Glyn and the team at Sampleism are great to work with.

my advice is: my hd space is precious so keep it for yourself.
Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.

Here's a point of reference. Someone is charging money for this sample library:
Same guy is also selling this as a "sample library" although it says "I did not make any loops, special melodies sample banks or any improvements. You are welcome to do that by yourself in a way it fits your sampler or DAW" in the description:
If he can charge for his wares, you can.

Suggestion. Try to have some free samples available, like in a demo pack kinda thing too. If it's good, then people will buy them.
Maybe that was already mentioned though.

Oh yeah, that geezer has tried to promote his "IKEA assembly yo'self samples" in the forum too, and has been given the KVR treatment: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... t=monotronUltimateOutsider wrote:Same guy is also selling this as a "sample library" although it says "I did not make any loops, special melodies sample banks or any improvements. You can set the price a bit higher first, and then make a no-brainer sale and everyone will buy it...
But don't expect to get rich with it as long as you're not as good as Eddie Tarilonte!
Anyway, FX samples are more sought after than zillions of EDM construction kits.
