Hi,
I'm about to buy either the Behringer truth B2031 (old bigger version) or the B2030A (new smaller version). I'm just wondering if there are any significant improvements on the new version. I guess I'd need the extra low end, but I'm still wondering.
Should I buy the Behringer B2031 or B2030A monitors?

There's a 2031A model coming as well, btw; new version of the bigger ones.

Just out of interest, what made you choose these, they seem really well priced. Im getting some monitors in the near future but am a bit nervous as Im not sure Ill be able to hear which speakers are better or not in a shop environment

Yeah, I recently went to listen to some monitors, and I just gave up as it was tough listening over the background music, people on guitars etc. I was surprised by the Fostex PM1s though. Sounded quite good for the price. Couldn't get to hear any Event TR8s though (the TR5s were too little and lacked the bass I need).
Blue Sky are going to release some interesting new monitors soon though - MediaDesk. They'll be the smallest in the range, but apparently still go flat +-3db down to 35Hz with the Sub. It'll be about $600 (whatever that means in £) and looks interesting for the computer musician. www.abluesky.com

I chose the truth monitors because of the positive feedback from them, their price, their wide frequency spectrum. There are people who dislike them aswell, but everything is relative. I mean, if I would compare them to genelecs I would probably dislike them aswell. I'm not hoping them to be perfect, but neither is the acoustics in my room. I just want something better than my hi-fi speakers with enough bottom end and detail, that won't break the bank. Btw. they used to be like 550£ and they were considered "good for the price", now that they are 220£ or something like that, they are a bargain.
I don't want to wait for the B2031A monitors so I think I'll settle with the B2031 ones.

Just my $.02 - I went into a store intent on buying the B2031's, but after hearing them, found them really unclear, particularly around the mid-high end. Alongside the Alesis M1 Active MK2's, they sounded wrong... really happy with the Alesis's, they're great.

Glad you asked this, because I've been considering the B2031A. IIRC it's got a more powerful amp, new filters, and a different material for the woofer cone. Was just asking about the same question over on another board.
Here's what I've gathered are the pros and cons, based on reading on the web:
+ they're cheap enough that a couple months of scrimping should do it
+ for the price they're pretty flat
+ generally good engineering
+ big ol' woofer, larger than some comparably priced monitors
+ fairly useful controls on back
- reliability and service are said to be substandard
- low-end definition has been compromised to provide a bigger "sweet spot"
- the good engineering is partly because it's a knockoff of a substantially better monitor
- come with a zero to negative prestige level, totally free
Considering this choice as a lightweight kind of musician, of the negatives above I *think* the only one that's critical to me is the first -- reliability/service.
A lot of this isn't stuff I KNOW, it's what I gather to be a consensus of many opinions. I'd be glad to hear other people's opinions. FWIW, I'm a musical hobbyist who might have a bit of light work in the future, but don't have a proper studio. Whatever I get will be driven by a M-Audio Firewire 410.
