Ok, theres a popular phrase

"If it's not broken, don't fix it"

Well, that phrase, for some of us (lots of krazy ppl) should be completed with

"if it's not broken, don't fix it. But go on anyways you moron, its fun to reinstall XP"

Said that.

I have tried SP2 RC1 and found that the system, after some days, starts showing a weird behaviour namely strange partial system freeze, not being able to run anything, disk drive stuck reading some kind of background system garbage, and the overall system performance was poor, most noticeable while browsing and moving windows around (you know, the redraw is slower that you're accustomed)

Also several programs started to get troubles with DX related files (DirectSound, AVI troubles rendering and crash prog)

So I tried to reinstall DX9 to discover that you can't.

Finally, SP2 puts A LOT of data (aside of 220mb that takes the SP1 backup)in your C drive so my XP installation was 1.2gig!

Ok, the good part is, that SP1 worked perfectly fine, is really solid, at a point that when I went back from SP2 to SP1 I could reinstall DX9 and all runs smooth again. (moral here is "Stick with SP1 as long as you can")

I don't know if the final SP2 could be a performance hit for us DAW users, but I think, even if this was RC1(IknowIknow) was worth to share this on the forums.

I think the RC1 bit speaks for itself. It's still beta!!! Yes, it's the Release Canidate, but not the final version. Beta plugins are bad enough, but beta fixes? Just say no.

Hey Microsoft has kept you as paying betatesters for f**king years and you still haven't caught on???!?

Not that Microsoft would stick to this definition, but beta means "we're still working on it" while RCx means "we believe this works, still got the debugger running for great justice though".

Microsoft apparently consider a program ready for release candidate status if it can load a few libraries and maybe show a nice splashscreen.

I've paid for 8 windows licenses since win95osr2.1 and I still haven't got a dependable OS to make music on. My linux boxes are rock solid though, so were my Atari's and my Amiga. I'd go mac if it wasn't for the exorbitant hardware prices, the limited hardware support and their butt-ugly design crap which really annoys my pragmatic frame of mind.

I really wish more developers would support *nix'es.

My definition of RC is STILL beta.

If it's not released to the public as the 'official' release, it's beta in my book.

Anyway, you never suffered Guru Meditation errors on the Amiga? I did on occasion. Probably about as often as my Windows boxes crash, which is rarely.

Guru meditation did happen, but very seldom while tracking. I must admit that I mostly have my amiga for games though (yes, it's still alive

), being a midi+hardware kind of guy (and having a very expensive bit of epoxy-filled plastic dangling from my atari...)

Yep - "RC" means "Release Candidate". It's strictly beta. I won't install SP2 until after it goes live and after it's been hotfixed once or twice.

I never had a Guru when working with Music-X, and I did a fair amount with it. Bars And Pipes got me in trouble occasionally, but I think that was because I was flying a tad faster than my angels (Amiga 500 with an iffy motherboard).

I miss Music-X occasionally, but not nearly as much as I miss one other MIDI sequencing program, that I still use on my old Macs and that I wish would work under OS X but which is gone forever ....

I was an OctaMED man myself. Ahh... those were the days... Kinda glad they're over though, I like the new tools much better.

It's hard to believe nowdays, I do remember all the fun I had on an Atari ST, which didn't even have a hard drive!

(Which was pretty frustrating, I must admit. They cost a bomb though)
