I re=installed windows and everything was goint great until a few minutes ago.

I was on the line an POOF.. blue screen.

I copied some of the info:

Stop 0X0000008E, 0XC0000005, 0XBF83EB68, 0XF3E80A84, 0X00000000)

Win32k.sys address BF83EB68 BASE AT BF800000, DATE STAMP 3F73195d

It also said to turn try and changing my video adapter (it that just the cable?)
Disable caching or shadowing, which I don’t know how to do either.

I really would appreciate some super geek help here, this is driving me crazy.

The crash seems to only be on my internet boot, the music boot appears stable. However, I haven't been using the music boot for long periods of time.

if kvr started charging for all the help, it would have a lot of money.

I make problems for myself. I'm also ooushing this poor PC to do more than any PC really should.

I should have one PC for music and one for digital videos, but alas I don't

Oh,

most of my roblems came from swithcing from a Mac to PC, I just had no idea what I was doing.

If it weren't for people like you, I would have gone back to Mac

If you just reinstalled windows and you are experiencing problems immedietly, you likely have a hardware issue. By the sound of it, it could be the video card (adapter and card, same thing).

You will probably need to take this to an experienced pc tech to get them to fix it properly, but.. you might be able to get by if you:

1. format your HD then reinstall. Not sure if you did this already, if so disregard. Many virii are not destroyed by simply reinstalling, and can cause problems with the new windows install.

2. check your bios' (push del or maybe esc on startup during the memory check) options for toggles such as video shadowing or caching and disable them. (highly doubt this will work)

3. swap in a new video card if you have one handy and see if that resolves it.

But you will probably save yourself alot of time and energy if you take the computer to a tech. I'd recommend myself, but Canada is a long drive, errr flight from Germany

well I wouldn't go out and buy a new video card just yet..

it could likely be a driver problem

I had a driver problem with my ATI Radeon videocard which was giving me random bluescreens.. so I flushed the old drivers, installed new drivers (directx 9 first) and voila.. no more blue screens.

of course I think my initial problem was that the drivers were made to work with directx 9 and I had 8.1 installed at the time.. oopsie.

the point im trying to make is.. dont assume the worst first.. troubleshoot the more basic things before thinking about reinstalling windows or buying more hardware. I'm sure Devon will be around to help.. if he cant well I'll be back with more questions for you so we can pinpoint the problem

A bit more info.

Before I re-installed windows the blus sreen happened every few hours, after the re-install it has only happened once in a few days. I suppose it could be just luck.

I while back I also noticed my screen colors were "off" this has happened before and it "fixes itslef" over time. Sounds like my video card is going south.

I appeciate all the help guys. I don't mind if I need to replace this or that, but I hate the random crash. I'll go look at the drivers.

I did notice that MSN messanger 4.7(ish) installed itself with the windows re-install and it kept popping up, so got rid of it.

I'll check the direct x drivers also

we are talking about windows xp, correct? And video drivers were automatically installed w/ the reinstall? If so, I find it highly unlikely that the video drivers that come with xp would crash your computer. Those drivers are extensively tested and WHQL certified.

Bottom line is a computer with a fresh reinstall + format should not crash for any reason other than hardware failure.

What about my display changing colors (well slight shades) and then changing back? Isn't that a sign of a video card dying? I even had my wife look at the screen to see if I was "seeing" things and she said it did infact look different. We could both be nuts, of course.

I guess I better chime in here with people already expecting me to show up.

The colors going wonky? That USUALLY is the monitor starting to head south for the winter, but won't swear it's not the video card.

I hate to say ignore floyd on this, BUT, if it's only this install of the OS on the same system that's giving you fits, and the other one is still, I'd be VERY hard pressed to say it's a hardware problem. While what ships with XP will probably not crash your machine, dont' forget about how much stuff is in your box that does NOT come with drivers, like your audio card for example, if it's not a Crap Blaster. Also, dont' forget, newer drivers don't necessarily mean they 'work'. I did an update for my video card from Microsoft's update, and WHAM, blue screen on first boot. Rolled back to last known good, problem resolved. I wasn't the only one with this issue and my Geforce 2 video card either.

Can you work on your music partition for a bit at least? That at least point us to more of a hardware issue.

I just discovery that there are new drivers for my video card, so I installed them.

I'm running a Motu 828 vis firewire for my sound card. I am also running a external Maxtor harddrive via firewire and I do get an occassional error from the drive. It is a "not able to writetot he drive" error, of course I wasn't trying to write to it at the time. I usually only have that drive on when I am making an image.

Could it be a bad firewire card?

Can you run without the drive for a bit to see if that's it? And just because YOU aren't trying to write to the drive doesn't mean the OS isn't doing something in the background.
