That is so smirk-a-licious !!!

I tried not to post, I really, really, tried believe me! That sentence just killed me though.

Looks like there are new motu drivers also...

Damn, I have register hadrward, I wish they would e-mail for updates....

Oh well

Remember to keep a copy of the old driver somewhere, just in case the new one is incompatible with your other hardware, or is just a crap release in general. I've made that mistake before, and was lucky that they still had the old driver on the site.....

Why don´t you get Win 2k?
That I installed after 2 years of having it at work where it never ever crashed, so I wanted to give it a try, and replaced my 98SE with it.
I do get a blue screen with that one also, but it happends damn seldomly - mostly if I connect a new USB device while it´s on - then I get a blue screen like one day later, weird :)
Regarding 2K versus XP as a DAW, I´ve read so much now on the net about both ways, that anyone who´d try to convince me that XP is the best, nomatter his technical knowledge, I´ll tell him that it´s all a matter of taste, cause in 2 minutes a win 2k will come and gimme his opinion.
Actually the manufacturor of my soundcard, STAUDIO recommends using XP, but I know they aren´t right about everything, since they recommend Standard PC and not ACPI PC on their webpage.
I had an awful lot of problems when my 2000 was configured as a standard PC, and they all disappeared when changing to ACPI!

So, if you´ve got more patience, you should give 2k a try.. it may be of great help - or maybe not.
As well disable everything you don´t use in your BIOS, such as serial ports..
Shuffle your cards as well 10-15 times to see if that helps you.
And try not to be a slave of logical thinking such as that it can only be hardware causing your problems when it´s a brandnew installation. Sorry to he who said that, but logical thinking won´t work with solving PC problems - sometimes you really have to think in an abstract way and try everything!

Good luck!

i've always thought of 2k and XP as one and the same (the version numbers are 2k - 5.0, XP - 5.1). i doubt changing operating systems that are so similar would have that much of an effect.

Or cable, or the drive is spinning down preventing the write, or the interface might not be seated nicely inside the firewire inclosure, or or or... ;) Ya act like troubleshooting is simple or something? ;) :D

It really, truely is machine dependent. Some people have totally rock solid systems, like my 1ghz Intel still running WinME for years WITHOUT crashing once, for example. Others have HORRIBLE luck. It ends up lying somewhere between the machine, the OS, and the user, really.

Ummm... if you say so. ;) I've been fixing pc's, laptops and servers for many years now, and it's logic that got the problem fixed.

Same here, worked with it for like 5 years, and I think it just depends on how far you wanna go in how complex you accept logic to be, so we prolly agree :)
An example is that if I turn my LPT off in the BIOS, windows won´t start, even if it was off when I installed the OS!
Now there´s definately a logical explanation for this, but it does not SEEM logical!
Assume someone makes a whole lot of changes at once to his system, including this one - which you of course never should, but take things one by one. Would it be logical then to assume that the disabled LPT port was the source of the problem? :) I´m sure it´s not the first thing you´d think about! :)
And btw, all drivers and registry entries were properly removed. I haven´t figured out the logic behind this one, though there is one, but it doesn´t really matter cause my system is about fine when its enabled :)

Ah yes, the 'weird crap' catagory! Know it well. Would you think of reseating the power cable for a CDRom on a system that will not power up at all? Been there. Same with floppy drive. The seating was just enough to draw too much current off the power supply, making it shut down to protect itself.

As for your 'weird crap' problem ;) wow, no, not normally, but it's all systematic, taking everything out, and building it back up until it works. That's logical, and VERY time consuming, but it works 99% of the time. Of course there's the problem that takes 3 engineers to come up with a good explaination too. ;)

Hmm, I missed the whole dual-boot thing. Your other identical OS on a seperate partition/drive works fine? If so, thats very strange. It could be caused by not formatting before reinstalling, or possibly by strange hardware that MUST have a driver update after an OS install or else it crashes - I've never encountered such hardware with windows XP but there is a first time for everything I suppose.

Also I don't have time to go through this thread right now but it seems to detail your problem almost exactly:

The more you work with 'em, the more they surprise and confound you. ;) I've seen too much stuff that don't make a lot of sense, but once you think through it, you get ideas, but not necessarily the technical answer either, only speculations....
