I'd like to run vsti's live, as cheaply and with as little latency as possible.

The setup wpuld just be a midi controller straight into a computer. Windows.

Probably on a laptop, though a tiny desktop is something I'm also thinking about...

What's best for this?

Why?

(We're looking for low cost, stability and low cpu, so I can run it on some cheap P.O.S.)

Hey!

I'm looking for why each of these is best...I was hoping for a discussion from which I could glean the pertinent information and decide what will best suit my needs.

Hey!

I may very well be an idiot!

What I really want to run is Sampletank (1)...

That comes with a standalone version, doesn't it?

Hmmm...

Hmm... What I liked about Bidule is that, even if a VST snuffs it, the sound will most likely just continue, and an error message will merely pop up informing you of the calamity.

On the other hand, it's still officially in beta, so it will eventually expire. However, as mentioned, the beta is very stable from my experience, and the public beta is free to download.

On the other hand, EnergyXT has things like a nice piano roll sequencer and a conventional mixer. Don't know about stability... I think it's a pretty small and simple app however, so it should be pretty stable. Don't know how it handles plugin crashes.

Yeah, it's bundled with RT Player (you can download it off IK's website if you don't have it).

I use Brainspawn Forte for this. It's specifically designed for live playing - you can change "scenes" (selection of VSTI, presets, MIDI control mapping, effects etc) by pressing the space bar. It will even work without a PC keyboard or monitor, you can manage it from your controller.
