Surprises from old songs (AKA 'so that's where the sample came from')

Konnichiwa,

Have you ever listened to an old song and suddenly been surprised at finding the origin of a small sample used in a later song?

Today, I had such a surprise whilst listening to Ozric Tentacles's ''Erpland'' (an album which is finally growing on me).

Specifically, at 0.12 (and repeated elsewhere in the song) comes a very familiar 1990s rave sample:

I'm sure many of us remember the compilation CDs which came out about 15 years ago, containing old and new songs which featured the same samples.

But it's still nice to have your own surprises from time to time, as you come across the origin of a well-known sample from an old song.

Have you ever had such a surprise whilst listening to an old song?
(And what do you think are the best samples from previous songs?)

Cheers,
Doug

Cool find, very familiar.

Not 'classic' but it happened to me the other day

I'd been in love with the She LP by S Maharba for a few years.

Then someone played me this, and it seemed oddly familiar.

Bit at 55 seconds

Usually it's the other way round, I recognise the sampled tune first

Great spot Rah - and curiously I'm the reverse of you: I didn't know of S Maharba, but I have a couple of Portico Quartet's albums. (Their third self-titled album is particularly good).

Cheers :)
