Hi Folks,

I'm trying to get some opinions on the best soundcard under $200.

It is for a friend who just had 2 little boys (a lovely little daughter makes for 3 little ones in all) and has a VERY tight budget.

He is exceptionally gifted, so I hate to see him be unable to write/record because of an inferior soundcard with latency so high it is dysfunctional.

Currently, he is using some flavor of a cheap Creative card.

Any ideas on what I should suggest for him?

What will he use it for ?
Because, SB Live + kx are a decent beginning.

Hi Miles,
He will be using it for vocals, bass, and VST stuff.

Have your friend look into the M-Audio MobilePre. It's around $150 and comes with decent preamps and nice ASIO drivers.

Just got the Emulator X / 1212m card a few days ago. Seems good so far. It replaced my Terratec 6fire.

Yup if he has a sblive! he doesn't need to spend a cent (as long as he has some kind of preamp, even an old 4-track will do, because the sblive preamp ... sucks. Use the kx audio drivers www.kxproject.com I get 5ms asio latency on a midrange system. The next step up would be maudio audiophile 2496, he will need to buy a preamp to use it, if he wants to record vocals or whatever.

Hey, thanks MickGael for involving evetyone in my mess.

yes, I have a SB Live and yes I have Cubase SX and yes I have kx drivers. Evidently I'm not setting up kx right.

I suck. I'm REALLY not technical at all. Anyhow, thanks everyone for your help.

I love my Echo MiaMIDI, but there's no built-in preamp. I haven't used any M-Audio cards within the same price range so I can't compare. I have used a Delta 1010 however and I was unhappy with the drivers and mixer app. I couldn't change the ASIO latency while my sequencer was open which was annoying, and I find Echo's mixer apps to be more intuitive and flexible.
