You can't go wrong with " The Glue " compressor and +1 on TDR Feedback compressor forget about it being freeware IMHO its very good . I can't believe its freeware and X64 etc etc . These 2 are my favorites , also Limiter No.6 for freeware too. The Glue is not free but well worth the price .

You know? I have to agree with you. I have 5,000,000 compressors including the Waves SSL but for some reason that stupid little Pro-C seems to be the workhorse compressor that in my opinion is one of the best I've ever heard. It can be transparent and it can color. It's immensely versatile without a doubt. I would definitely give it a thorough testing.

I am using stock studio one compressors plus fxpansion dcam. You know there is a free sll compressor DCAM FreeComp right?

Slate Digital VBC
Cytomic The Glue
Soundtoys Devil-Loc

That's what I like to use. Soon Slate Digital will have two more compressors with the VMR rack. VBC is the one I use the most Devil-loc is a noisy compressor that's the best for the drum track. The Slate Digital compressors for me are the best character compressors and they are very simple to use. The Glue came with Ableton Live that I like testing on tracks.

Compassion is better than the others when you want more options because it has more options than any other compressor think of it as an all dynamics processor very transparent. It does compression, limiting, loudness maximising, gate, transient shaping.

Please feel free to give a try to FR-COMP87 (freeware).

It features the same algorithm as SD-COMP87 (which is more flexible and has a sidechain):

The Portico 5043 compressor plugin was designed by Rupert Neve in conjunction with Yamaha/Steinberg. Its very impressive. So is the eq they did.

I think it depends what you want from a compressor. If you want a clean, more technical compression (reducing the dynamic range of a sound), the Cubase compressor will do fine. If so want character and sound mangling, go for an emulation of the 1176 (e..g by IKM, NI, Softtube...). Ease of use might be important if you are not that experienced with compressors, so maybe an emulation of a LA2A or the SSL bus compressor like the Glue.
Really lots of options here, so I'd suggest you proceed slowly, try the good freeware compressors first (apart from the aforementioned TDR and Molot there are also the very good but sadly only win32 Variety of Sound plugins and klanghelm's excellent DC1A), then may be take a look at the lower budget comps from the likes of Klanghelm, Toneboosters, signaldust, sknote and others or grab the IK multimedia vintage compressor bundle on a sale.
I really don't think you need to spend more than 50 bucks for a compressor plugin nowadays, not saying that the more expensive ones aren't good, just save them for later when you gained more experience with compressors and know exactly what you want...

I highly recommend the Hornet Plugins.

It sound identical to the Softube, one of the highest regarded emulations, at only a fraction of the cost.

Nobody mentioned Kush's UBK1 ? Imho the most unique sounding itb compressor. Can be used on single tracks (not so good for drums imho) and for the master (with subtle settings).
Slate VBC has some grit too and it has three different models, though I prefer UBK1 for that "analog dirt".
NI's Supercharger GT is somewhere in the same ballpark, very nice to fatten up instruments (amazing on EDM drums) or to get that bit of extra loudness on the master.
Definitely get TDR Feedback comp and Molot, they're both great.
If you're on windows, get all the variety of sound stuff, it's great too.
If you're into sidechaining have a look at DC8C2.
Then there's compassion, probably THE compressor for people who love to tweak and finetune stuff though it's not so good for quick results imho. (although very good to learn stuff about compression

)
There are other great comps like the glue, alpha compressor or the NI VCxx series though something like UBK1/slate VBC (character) + TDR Feedback/DC8C2(transparent) will cover most of your compression needs.

Maybe you could check the Softube's comps, they are on sale right now. I can't mix without using
the Softube's comps. +1 for Kush UBK61, very unique plug !
