I mostly use the multi-mode compressors of the Wave Arts TrackPlug and sometimes The Rocket from Stillwell Audio.

Kush Audio's UBK-1 is my fav one for buss duties, it strengthens groove and emphasize movement in a fantastic way (as long as you mix into it from scratch).
TDR Feedback Compressor II and Klanghelm DC8C 2 come close, pretty different beasts than UBK-1 though, with much more usual layouts/features. They sound fantastic nevertheless.

VBC for me. The FG-Red is living on my mix bus with Voxengo Elephant following it. Also using the Red and Grey on various tracks. I like the Grey on drums. Good stuff!

I haven't read the whole thread so I don't know if anyone's already said this but... If you're still getting to grips with compressors then the last thing you should do is buy more. You should really learn how to use them and when to use them before you shell out for something that you don't know how to use properly yet. Plus, there are many excellent free compressors out there - TDR Feedback Comp II, Jscompshaper, all the old buzzroom comps, De La Mancha sixtyfive, Endorphin, Blockfish, Red Phatt Pro, Compressive Pro... could go on. Trying to save you some money here!

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions and advice. I've been trying some of the suggested freebies as well as some demos. I am heeding the very good advice and will not rush into buying anything unless I feel it is going to be right for me to do so.
I think compression is one of the more difficult things to master. Trying out different compressors and attempting to break down how they are doing what they are doing has been useful. Also been watching some very helpful videos. The ones on Fabfilters website for Pro-C are very good. They are based around using Pro-C but the techniques can be applied to other compressors.

One of the most interesting things that I discovered when I was learning my trade was that the more I understood about compression and its uses the less I used it. Some of my recent mixes have only had a touch of buss compression and vocal compression (you almost ALWAYS need vocal compression...). I always try to find other ways to achieve control over dynamics first before I reach for the compressor now.

Thinking of buying one or two compressor plugins
