I see a lot of versions of this in various factory patch banks. What is the origin of the name? I would guess that it emulates a sound of a particularly popular song or genre, but what? Anyone wanna take a minute and school me?

Afaik, this widely used bass preset originated in Yamaha's TX81Z synth module, but as for how the actual name came about I'm not sure tbh.
A composer is a guy who goes around forcing his will on unsuspecting air molecules, often with the assistance of unsuspecting musicians. - FZ

I see. I'll bet it was as popular as the James Brown "Whoa..Hey" sample was back in the day.

I was thinking the same thing. Sounds like the right era and it's the only song that comes to mind with the word lately in it. The two guys that were doing her music were really on top back then.

Lately Bass is a preset number C15 in Yamaha TX81z. I kept my unit for one purpose only.. and that was to play this sound (I've heard other people doing the same thing). It's a very nice sounding bass that layers really well analog sounds. Lately Bass can be heard a lot in early 90's electronic music. Good news is that you can get to know this legendary sound by yourself if you have a synth that is capable of playing .sfz files. Here is a free Lately Bass SFZ from patcharena:

___________All of the instruments are multi-sampled, but with Lately Bass we have gone to extremes – 12 velocity layers and 420 un-looped samples.

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Now we're cooking. I'm going to revisit this sound and get a feel for how it is used. If you haven't guessed, I'm trying to build a strong foundation to work from. I have a lot to learn. Click my soundcloud linky for proof...
