All things considered, SC is still easily the king.

I still use soundclick but I switched to the fre version a few years ago because they couldn't get their billing straight (I was a VIP member for years). They kept 'double pinging' my bank account, they would only charge me once but for a day or two and extra ten bux was tied up. It's not that ten bux is a big deal, it's how they handled it or should I say refused to handle it. If I sense any chance of a security breach where my financial info is concerned I protect myself, besides the 10 bux got me nothing really. TBH I check that page about once a month at best though.

Meanwhile soundcloud, I have just a free account there because I dont post a lot of music. I have not seen any changes tbh, what am I missing?

If you are like me and not promoting your music and just sharing it with friends and such dropbox works well and tindeck is also another free hosting site I will use and seems to be growing.

I don't care, got used to the new design and the frequent bugs, the cam girls and spammers, the buy followers and jerks, so what, it's the Internet and with 2000+ patchpool demos there is no alternative for me anyway.

I haven't really checked up on what youtube does with the audio. I used to follow the instructions but for a while I insert a .wav into the video and it doesn't sound worse. Sounds very close to what I listen to on my hard drive. The last thing I uploaded to soundcloud was too noticably damaged.

Changes to youtube, I remember some slight annoyance but I forget what it was. Wait, it was that google wasn't believing 'Civil' could be a name, so I had to prove it to unlock my account. That's literally unbelievable to me. I told them to google it. Idiots.
Their recommendations have gotten more relevant to me.

Youtube or Facebook is definitely where I find out about most things that are fresh to me. You know you can have an actual discussion rather than 'awesome' pinned to that half-waveform.

Official.fm has a nice visual presentation. Looks good on Facebook.

Just like any other "social" product, it's now a spam-riddled mess of crap. If you have the bottle to wade through 10 feet of shit, you may be rewarded with the occasional nice tune.

Me for one, I'm done wading through shit and getting spammed in the process.

I'm not a pro and not promoting myself. My interest in SC was the way musicians could have great conversations around specific points in a piece. When collaborating, we could discuss specific places where someone comes in, makes a change, etc. SC was an amazing tool for collaboration and discussion around audio. All that is gone because, as jancivil says, with the changes to tiny comments from tiny icons, we now have "awesome" instead.

RIP SC.

Same for me. Recent browser version too.

Sound cloud joins the ranks of formerly-useful websites now totally junk by overengineering and marketing... and asswipe management. Like Flickr.

Just a question (maybe I'm just plain stupid...):

Is there no way at all to see the full comments, on other people's tunes (longer comments), on the new soundcloud format?

As far as I can tell they're being trimmed down both in the player and in the comment list below the song.

Post

I haven't found any way to view full comments from the player, but you should be able to see all of the comments by clicking on the "View All" control at the top right of the comment list.

Post

You have to change the view to comments, and then the waveform isn't visible. It's a totally stupid change.

Commenters do not go to the comments page. They click the waveform to comment, where they're allowed about 1/4 sentence of space. There are no more long comments being posted now, and the old ones are no longer visible within the original context of the waveform they were posted about.

We're left with meaningless 2-word comments only.

But if you click on the "View All" button, you're taken to the comment page where you can read full sentences, so meaningful commenting is still possible. But most commenters only write things like "Dope", "Yo", "Sucks", "Heavy" anyway...

I read in the news that Twitter is no longer mulling about a SoundCloud acquisition.
Anyway, I like the new Soundcloud design and it works for me.

What I like is when I read at 2:21 in the comment that there's a drop because I always tend to confuse them with thunderstorms... :o

soundcloud is still the best site to embed your music with a soundwave view I guess. any others around?

Right, but in that view you can't see where you are in the waveform. The whole thing has become a schizophrenic mess. And as I said, visitors don't change to that view, so they also miss your responses. I used to have quite a few regular, really meaningful exchanges with many other musicians on SC...these were people who made a real effort to communicate regularly with each other. I can tell you that every one of those people is really sad about the changes...basically it's the musicians who communicated with other musicians regularly who are most bummed, particularly those who, like me, used the waveform comments as a means of detailed collaboration.

Anyway, no matter now, my participation has been way down since I no longer receive meaningful comments there at all, and none of my detailed comments are apparently read, let alone responded to anymore.
