Well, I just took a trip down to the store to see what the Sennhieser HD650s sounded like because some people have compared the Shure SRH1540s to them, and I have to say I wasn't entirely impressed.

There's no denying that the HD650s are clear and have decent detail, but once I put on my Beyer DT770s right next to them, on the same songs, from the same power source, the DT770s sounded a bit louder, the bass was WAY better (more present, audible) on the DT770s, and it was really hard for me to pick out which one was actually clearer in the mids and highs. I'd have to give the detail to the Senns, but only by a hair.

Not nearly enough for me to consider spending another $400 for the Senns when I my DT770s cost $170.

Not really much point in picking up the SRH 1540s if they aren't much different from my DT770s...

Check out the Focal Spirit Professional (not the "Spirit One", which is the consumer model):

Focal make great speakers, and the reviews of these headphones seem very positive.

Peace,
Andy.

OK! Success.

ccDucket nailed it. (thanks!)

Went to the store today and took the plunge and got the Shure SRH940s. So thanks to ccDucket who mentioned them above!

The extra $200 wasn't enough to justify the 1540s for me, but the 940s sound GREAT. I've only been playing them for about 4 hours and already they sound pretty amazing. Very present bass, but the mids and high end sound nice. Smooth right from the mids into the highs. Clear, warm, not distant sounding, and the bass doesn't seem to bleed into the mids like the M50s.
Everything is present in the right amounts with maybe a bit of an emphasis on the bass, which is what I wanted.

I can definitely work with these. I did pick up a 4 channel headphone amp from Presonus, so now I can audition the music on several sets, and with ToneBoosters Isone speaker simulator, the downstairs stereo, the iPhone and the car stereo, got enough to work with.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

=)

Regarding the Focal Pros quality level, I've had mine since the end of last summer, daily use and not had any problems with them. Batch problem perhaps? Maybe I'm just overly careful with my headphones! :)

They do I admit never leave the studio as I've got far less bulky headphones for out and about or gigs.
