Just wondering what duties/taxes you had to pay (if any) at the border. I hate surprises ;)

Post

Yes, and from what I remember, yes.

So much for free trade! :P

Hmm, I will email them. Thanks for the link. In particular I'm looking for a refill for Reason called Ambient Textures. I've played with it at a friends and its a VERY good sorta Atmosphere-lite, at least for $79 US.

I have ordered from them but i will not do it again.
They Charged...
$20.00 US to send the CD in an envelope.
Upon arrival the courier charged me another $20.00
for what they call Brokerage.

Now i will tell you how long it took to get here from time i ordered... Over 2 weeks..

And it ended up costing me nearly $50.00 Canadian... way too much for shipping charges on just a CD. I emailed them suggesting to implement better shipping methods but received No Reply.
I can send my Manytone CDs around the world Airmail Insured for under $10.00, in fact only about $4.00 from Canada to USA.

Thats an awful deal Manytone... Looks like I won't be buying from there. Its funny how many purchases I would instantly make if they were downloadable - but when a product is only available in physical media, and not even available in my country it basically kills the sale for me..

In other thoughts, why doensn't Canada have a big internet music 'superstore' a la zzsounds, samash etc? Sure, we have long & mcquade, but those guys know almost nothing about computer music in my experience.

I used to work at L&M back in the day, and I asked then about an online store, and the management was full of excuses about why NOT to have an online store. Still, I think it's an open market on top of the almost total monopoly L&M has. Give Jack Long a call, I'm sure he'd listen.

Tips for ordering from the U.S. to Canada:

1. Do NOT allow the shipper to use a private courier (UPS, FedEx, etc..) They apply the brokerage charge whether or not there is any duty owing, which is simply ridiculous. Just use good ol' US Mail and you will be fine.

2. The only additional charges should be a $5.00 customs handling fee (IF they even open it) and the 7% GST on the stated value of the package contents.

3. Now, based on item 2 you can see that it is possible to have the shipper write "CD -- promo, value $0" or something like that, in which case NO duty or taxes will be charged. I have done this and it worked like a charm. I have also never waited longer 2 weeks for anyhting that I have ordered from the U.S.

You might consider www.kellysmusic.ca
They are somewhere in Manitoba. I've never ordered from them, but they appear to have a good selection judging from their website. I've had good luck with Saved By Technology in Toronto. You can't order over the web, but you can do phone orders. They do have a rather arcane system of faxing in a scan of your credit card, though.

Fedex does not have a brokerage fee....however if duties and taxes are to be collected, there is a 7.00 ROD fee. (because Fedex paid the duties for you...your shipment gets cleared faster and you in turn pay them back what they paid Canada Customs..it's kind of a loan fee)

Your best bet is to have the shipper put demo cd or promotional cd as a description with a value of 0.00 and you shouldn't have any problem.

The US postal Express mail works great too and it is cheap....2-3 days service...

whatever you do, do not allow for shipping by UPS. They will ding you for a minimum of $35. I found out the hard way when I ordered Project5 from audiomidi.com. I'll never do that again.

Don't forget that they only take 1 out of every 10 packages for taxes and so... so you may up not having to pay the taxes, is kinda of a lotery. :D I saw a guy on the post office complaining that he never paid any taxes or fees when receiving CDs from overseas, but that time the guys got him. ;-) The office woman told him about the 1 in 10 thing...
