Forget the video, the song is nice, though, I like the bass during the funky solo and the synthwork, especially towards the end...

I recently took a dive into the "Michael Jackson - Xscape" album.
I am not surprised of the money milking, neither of the loudness. But I am(!!!) surprised from when the original songs actually where time wise. And why they were dropped.
The original from Xscape for example, sounds like as if it was made between 1995 (History) and 1997 (Blood on the Dancefloor) - which was his typical sound at that time. The lyrics also clearly stab at the fact that it might be a "sequel" to "They don't care about us" (and the song's real meaning and the controversy revolving around it).
"Do you know where your children are", fits perfectly into the times of "Dangerous" 1991. It has a similar sad feeling like "Who is it".
"Slave to the Rhythm", could have worked for "Blood on the Dancefloor" and successive albums. "Take me to a place without a name" is also in style of "Dangerous". "Love never felt so good" is soundwise actually one of the eldest. It sounds to me like as if it was from "Thriller" or "Bad", maybe even older. His voice sounds younger.
Nonetheless, the "upmixed" versions are actually sounding great. Xscape alone has a nice vibe of oldschool RnB, with a sub-tone of (yes, dare I say it): "Drop it like it's hot" by Snoop Dog and Pharrell Williams, or Missy Elliot's stuff from mid 2000's. I definitely dig the more electronic oriented version of "Do you know where your children are", "Slave to the Rhythm" is a bit too much overdone chart stuff for my liking (think Timbalake, mixed with every other half naked chick on screen) - but it's a cool mix nonetheless.
Is the album worth it?
Well... considering that it's technically another(!) remix album (and there are still great fan/bootleg remixes floating around, like "They don't care about us" by Mikkas), I can't tell. At least it's not totally disappointing. You actually get 8 upmixed songs, 8 "original versions" that were unreleased so far (which show a great retrospective) and one "mix" with Timberlake. Plus a documentary (that I've yet to see) on Disk 2 for 16bucks (Amazon, Deluxe Pack). The regular edition with only 8 tracks for 13bucks is a bit of a ripoff compared to that.

John 5 -Remixploitation, it's an instrumental guitar album and pretty good. If he just accepted the role as a singer also, it would be better, the other bands he's been in get old mainly because of the stupid lyrical content.
