Most of my stuff is 60-100bpm.
My default project opens at 80bpm, and I slow it down or speed it up from there.
Last time I did anything faster than 100 was when I was fiddling around with dub-techno ideas a couple of years ago (max. 120bpm). I gave up in the end, because it always sounded so much like every other dub-techno track that I didn't see the point any more. I still kept some of the stab & pad presets though. They come in handy sometimes.
I tell a lie - I did have a track not that long ago that was in 160, but that was so I could ram loads of events in the step-sequencer. I effectively half-timed the main rhythmic backbone so that it was really going at 80bpm to the ear.

Full on gabba style or are you squeezing something else out of that? Everytime I went that crazy with the speeds I had my neighbour hear it banging on his ceiling - he'd come round and it would devolve into a messy gabba meets occult/magickal-rap session. Wish I'd recorded some of that. Just to laugh at...it was terrible. Or was it, thinking back?....

i used to have sendy's range, now it's more like 80-150.
it's also worth noting that when you do a lot of shuffle/triplet stuff, 130 can feel pretty damn fast.

id say 60-200 would be my max range.
60 for the dark ambient stuff. ill top out at 200 if im doing some psycore (which is rare). either of those extremes is not common for me, most of my stuff stays more around the 120-145 range.
as for why. my music is mostly for dancing to...and for me 120-140 is what seems best for that. thats the tempo range of the music i dance to myself...so it makes sense i would gravitate to that.

I don't do "BPM" really. The idea is what it is and I play things in and Cubase tells me what tempo when I make the timeline fit what I did by 'time warp tool'.
I may define the beat differently according to both meaning (ie., if the real denominator's meaning is a dotted value I may define it according to the three subdivisions, or as the normal denominator when neither duple or triple dominates) and convenience, and a lot of it is half-time in order to see a finer grid for additional parts. So the tempo marking is not a defining thing per se.
I enjoy more elasticity than a clock.
