so much of my music starts on guitar my tempo will vary, I it's an art (albeit a very small one) in itself trying to find the right tempo for a riff or whatever. The same can be said about all instruments, but guitar tone does change with the speed at which things are played (ie, when playing fast their is less sustain between notes/chords) as well as the feel of the the instrument can change with speed of course. My range for tempo is probably 60-180bpm though I do have several incomplete projects at 200bpm

I have no idea, in Reaper I just go-show master track, and push the tempo bar up and down until it sounds ok.

It's 80 (and double timing it at 160). 80 is nice and calm, but not too slow, while 160 is high but still controllable.

I usually avoid 120, mainly because I grew up with 80s Eurodisco on the radio and it makes me want to break something.

Once tried 10, like Bohren und der Club of Gore, but it gave me a rash.

I have one song in 210, in full Venetian Snares mode. I had a lot of fun with that, but it's not something I'd want on a daily basis.

Thanks What I want to do is have the drums and acid line take turns in being "the fast one", and do it as a gradual contour rather than just hard switching every x bars.

Heh, i wanted to suggest the synth should go into spastic 16ths at some point to be true 250 bpm.
Even better if they take turns.

This is the kind of thing that's still interesting to me as far as ultraspeed goes - using it in controlled doses.
Doubletime, pft - let's go quad or octatime from 50 bpm!

this feels like genuinely well above 300 bpm when the beats first join in. later on it halves back to 'normal' braindance territory, then it goes halftime again in the reggae-ish part.

funny it was sitting in a recommended playlist on my soundcloud - pretty much what i was thinking about.

Looks like 107, low 80s, or 120ish is pretty typical for me.

When I do faster tempos (150 or 170 or so) they tend to have odd time signatures and lopsided rhythms and be a bit more sparse.

Yup, same here. No favorite tempo (or musical style/genre for that matter), although I rarely write anything slower than 70 bpm and faster than 160 bpm. I tend to conform with a stylistically appropriate tempo when doing dance music (e.g., house, trance, DnB). However, I don't restrict myself to any one of those styles/genres, so I naturally don't restrict myself to any specific tempos. But, I do find that I often tend to prefer tempos on the slower end of the range usually associated with a given dance genre.
